4.0 out of 5 stars The Awakening 14 Sep 2009
By J. Snook VINE™ VOICE
When a claymore unleashes it's full power and reaches it's 'yoki limit' they begin to transform into an incredibly powerful monster called an 'awakened being'. After experiencing her own awakening and having to pull herself back from the brink, tough chick Clare becomes a Claymore on the run and begins her own quest to avenge her beloved Theresa and hunt down the vicious awakened being - Priscilla. However, while this is going on, an all new and even more powerful force is stirring in the north that's going to need an army of Claymore's to stand a chance.

Like the previous release of Claymore, this third and fourth outing succeeds in creating some nice characterisation and excellent storylines, while looking absolutely gorgeous at the same time. However, this middle section of the series shows some signs of fatigue and begins to drag it's feet slightly. This is particularly evident during a fight scene that takes place in a cave over 2 episodes. However, the majority of the show kept me intrigued and hooked throughout. Another small niggle I've got with this show, and especially this particular volume is the fact that the character designs for the Claymores are incredibly similar; so much so that it is often difficult to distinguish them from eachother. This can make the show pretty confusing; especially when characters from earlier in the series make a reappearance and the audience is expected to remember who they are.

Once again, we get the choice of Japanese language track or English dub and as for special features, there are some interviews with the Japanese staff, comentaries with the English cast as well as the complimentary textless opening and closings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunters and hunted 26 Nov 2011
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Second volume in the Claymore anime series. All about a world where humans live in fear of monsters who are hunted in turn by Claymores. Women in armor with powers that can lead to them becoming monsters themselves if they're not careful.

This volume begins right where the first left off and there's nothing in the way of exposition for new viewers, so you're better off starting with Claymore Vol 1 & 2 [DVD] instead.

There are two discs here, and each has four episodes on them. They run twenty two minutes each [approx] and can be watched one at a time or all in one go. If you go for one at a time then the select an episode menu is slightly fiddly, requring you to use the right key on the dvd menu to jump through the list of episodes, but you do get used to that.

The audio options allow you to watch it dubbed, with an english voice cast.

Or the original japanese language version with english subtitles.

Each disc has a short interview with one of the production crew.

The opening and closing titles to the episodes without any text.

And a commentary on one of the episodes.

As for the episodes themselves:

It does a very good job of doing what all middle parts of trilogies should: adding more detail to the world of the story and the story itself. And developing things so that when it finishes, the viewer will be desperate to know what happens next.

The first episode is very exposition heavy as Clare and some colleagues learn a secret about themselves. But then the action does kick in as she has to flee for her life. And yet help is at hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awakened Ones & Creatures of the Abyss 3 Sep 2009
By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

This second set of DVDs for the Claymore anime contains episodes eleven to eighteen and, if anything, is even better than the previous set. The episodes in this set again follow Clare as she fights Awakened Beings alongside her fellow Claymores but her special circumstances and those of her friends may put them in danger not just from the Yoma but from their own organisation.

The episodes in this set are all very good being both action packed and managing to advance the plot as well. A number of my favourite characters are introduced in this volume including the brilliantly mad Ophelia and the quite funny Riful and Dauf double act. The animation remains very good and the English dub is respectable, although Flora's voice is a little annoying. Claymore is turning into a good series with some nice action and it looks like the next volume could be even better.
