Product Description

Product Description

This is a BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Robert Graves' brilliant account of the madness and debauchery of ancient Rome, starring Tom Goodman Hill as Claudius and Derek Jacobi as Augustus. The wickedly entertaining inside story of the lives and deaths of the Imperial dynasty from Augustus to Caligula is told by their obscure relation, Claudius. In public, Claudius is a stammering, drooling weakling, whose reputation as an idiot keeps him safe from office and assassination. But in private, he's as sharp as they come, and keeps a secret history of everything he discovers. Until one day, as one of the few of his family left alive, he's acclaimed Emperor against his will. Can he save Rome from the corruption he's grown to detest? Featuring Derek Jacobi (who won a BAFTA for his performance as Claudius in the acclaimed 1977 BBC television production) as Augustus, and with an all-star cast, this gripping dramatisation will enthral anyone who loves the decadence of Ancient Rome.

A brilliant adaptation of the novels. The casting was excellent - Tom Goodman-Hill makes a Claudius every part of believable and sympathetic as Derek Jacobi did all those years ago. Of course Derek Jacobi appears as Augustus (do I have to says he's excellent? He is Derek Jacobi after all) and Tim McInnerny goes well beyond Blackadder with his portrayal of Tiberius. The whole cast does wonderfully well.

The drama is well thought out and the script writers have managed to adapt the books to audio form without losing any of the atmosphere or drama of the original novels. It's engaging and for I would suggest it is for anyone who loved the novels, as I did, or the TV series. It's also ideal for people who enjoy the audio-novel format - this is much more than that but if you know someone that likes their novels read to them then this is an ideal present. I have been looking a trifle odd recently as they only time and space I get to listen to this sort of thing is in the car - and hence when I get home from work I've been spending 5 minutes just sitting there just listening to this waiting for the end of the scene. I've enjoyed listening to Tiberius slowly descend in to madness, Caligula being mad, bad and yet somehow engaging. Livia just being incredibly nasty but oh so very clever and Claudius somehow, despite everything - surviving it all. Well done Auntie.

6 CD's of the best the BBC produces

An Excellent play with excellent actors - well worth the money. With approx 6 hours of running time, This is a BBC Radio Full cast dramatisation which only the BBC can do.
Derek Jacobi (Augustus) Tom Goodman-Hill (Claudius) Tim McInnerny (Tibirius) to name just three.

The sound track brings the play alive If you enjoy an audio-book, I am sure you won't be disappointed. This is the intrigue of ancient Rome at it's best and it is well worth the money to buy it.

Even if your historical interest is limited, especially when it comes to 'The Romans'!, this tale of the interior politics of the First Family is worth a listen. The way in which Claudius uses his disabilities to protect his life from those around him, demonstrates a very high level of ingenuity. By appearing to represent no threat at all to the succession list of wannabee Emperors, he eventually, and reluctantly, ends up running the Empire himself.
The casualty list along the way is distinguished and widespread. Neither intelligence or brute strength helps in this furious battle for supremacy. Poison is not selective in its choice of victims.
An exciting story, well told, ideal for car journeys, and dark winter nights...
