Format: Hardcover
(BE AWARE: This is a reissue of "Claude on Holiday")

It seems to me that for a kid's general interest picture/story book what you sometimes want is - a friendly looking hero, a story that moves along but makes sense, illustrations that are clear or at least easily explainable, and a cheerful overall vibe. There are other books that are edgier or maybe more audacious, but for a solid appealing read those basic elements seem to describe a successful book.

Well, that's what we have here. Claude has a certain wide-eyed cheerful appeal without being dopey or simple. He is adventurous but alert. He is brave and resourceful. There is a touch of "the innocent abroad", but he is not a foolish character. In this volume he's off to the beach, and he has a number of gentle, amusing adventures that involve sand castles, pirates, sharks and ice cream - which pretty much hits any kid's idea of a beach adventure. Between the drawings, (which are charming and expressive), and the narration, (which is clear but not patronizing), you get a story that is easy enough to follow, maybe with a little help, and very satisfying. There is a lot of extra business scattered throughout the illustrations, so there are things to talk about or to point out to your little reader as you go through the story. (There are also a few subtle little jokes for the adults just to keep your interest up as you read through together.)

"Charm" is a bit of an overused description, so let's just say that this book is a mellow little lark. And sometimes that's just what you want. A nice little find. Definitely worth a look.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Bought this for my daughter as she loves the Claude books but was disappointed as it is the same book as
Claude On Holiday only with a different title. So buyers beware!

Fun - a little caution if you are conservative 3 Aug. 2014
By CL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I received an eARC copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Here is my honest review.

My 7 year old and I read this book together; both of us enjoyed it. Claude is a dapper dog who enjoys adventures in the human world in the way only animals can. We laughed at Claude's antics and for this teacher mama, the discussion my son led once we finished was terrific. He noticed details, flipped back to check facts and analyzed the text in a very scholarly way. His teacher would've been so proud of him!

I liked the vintage feel to the illustrations. That being said, there was one scene that I thought was in pretty poor taste for a children's book.

SPOILER/MAMA ALERT: I believe in kids being kids and part of that, for our family, is protecting them from early exposure to sexualization. The bikini swimsuits and curvy figures were (personally) right at the line for me. The scene that showed a lifeguard helping a lady with her beach balls created concern for me. My husband also thought it was risque when I asked him if he thought I was being over-sensitive. For many children, this will not stand out to them, but it will for some and it certainly is not the place to put such exposure. I would like to see Claude in other books but have to admit to being a bit leery and will certainly keep my guard up.

I gave this book: ★★★
I would give this book 4 stars for the story and vintage-y illustration; I took away a star for the reason pointed out above.

{my thoughts} – I just finished reading this book to my six year old son. When I asked him what he liked most about the book he replied he liked that Claude went on vacation, searched for treasure and pretended to sleep. He had laughed and giggled through much of the book and all and all enjoyed it until the last page.

I really liked this book. The words go along nicely with the pictures. The story is about an adventure and it’s always fun to read about adventures. I also have a soft spot for books with animals in them. This book is incredibly enjoyable and I think any child would love to have this book/ series on the bookshelves. I look forward to reading more books in this series in the future.
Silly and Hilarious 27 April 2014

I thought Claude at the Beach by Alex T Smith was quite silly and hilarious. A good way to get your kids laughing.

Adventures with Claude 27 April 2014
By Dolores, a teacher - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Very cute, love the illustrations, many laugh out loud moments. Some of the adventures were over-the-top silly, but this will appeal to kids.

The only part I didn't like was the shark...even though drawn in a non-threatening way, I know of more than a few instances of kids having a problem going into the water because of a fear of sharks.
