Claude has a certain wide-eyed innocent appeal without being foolish or simple. He is adventurous and alert. He is brave and resourceful. There is a touch of "the innocent abroad", but he is not a bumbling character. He usually starts each new adventure as an inexperienced amateur, but then he always learns a lot before heading home for a bit of a rest.

In this volume Claude is feeling "boisterous", even after his previous day's noisy adventure at the library, so he and his best friend Sir Bobblysock are off to the ski slopes. They have a number of gentle, amusing adventures that involve snowball fights, sledding on tea trays, building a snow man, learning to ski, and being introduced to avalanches and mountain rescue . Between the drawings, (which are charming and expressive), and the narration, (which is clear but not patronizing), you get a story that is engaging and fun. There are lots of bits scattered throughout the illustrations, so there is more of interest than just the story itself. (There are also a few subtle little jokes for the parents at the expense of certain ski slope "types".)

For a kid's general interest picture/story book what I want is a friendly looking hero, a story that moves along but makes sense, illustrations that are clear, and a cheerful overall vibe. There are other books that are edgier or maybe more audacious, but for a solid appealing read those basic elements seem to describe a successful book, and to describe this book.

This book is a mellow little diversion with honest appeal. And sometimes that's just what you want. A nice little find and definitely worth a look.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

This book was an unexpected treat. I didn't realize when I requested it from NetGalley that it was a junior chapter book rather than a preschool picture book (there are still lots of pictures, but it's about 95 pages long and the text is divided into chapters). I also didn't realize it would be so delightfully hilarious! I was hooked by the first page, but by the time I got to this line I was in love:

"He lives with Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes and his best pal in the whole world, Sir Bobblysock, who is both a sock and quite bobbly."

When Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes are at work, Claude and Sir Bobblysock go on all sorts of adventures, this time finding themselves sledding and skiing down a large snowy mountain and rescuing people from an avalanche (which they may or may not have caused in the first place).

I'm so glad there are other Claude books because I can't wait to read all of them with my four-year-old, Magda!

Magda's Take:
"It's a really good book. It has really good illustrations and words. I want to meet the author and illustrator and publisher. Make sure to tell them that if they email you, we'll make sure to email them back. I want to tell them that I like the names of the owners--Miss Shinyshoes and Mr. Shinyshoes. It just blows my mind. Oh, but the best part is when Claude hangs upside down by his skis on the bench thing that goes across the pole. I definitely want to read more Claude books!"

A delightful and amusing story for young and shool age children from the 'Claude' series, especially for those who like dogs. The story is accompanied with lovely illustrations. It is also a good size book for small hands. My daughter enjoyed being read it when younger and now reads it herself (age 8).

Great sense of humour and fun for young and old, laugh out loud funny.
It is the perfect length to capture my daughters attention and to ensure she falls asleep just before the end .
Alex T Smith is my secret weapon at bedtime, this young man has tapped into something that my children love and I can read again and again and always have a chuckle.
Buy it, you can thank me later.

This is a charming tale of Claude and his best friend, Sir Bobblysock, and their adventures on the ski slopes. Surprisingly long for a children's picture book, with lovely 'retro' style illustrations, this is a sure winner for kids ages 6 to 10 (blurb says 7 to 11).

Reviewed in exchange for a preview Kindle copy.

All of the Claude books are well written and hilarious. My daughter at 8 years old reads voraciously and still asks for one of these books every year for Xmas despite her reading level having moved on to bigger books. I rather enjoy them too!
