This is excellent value for Debussy's sublime, subtle and challenging chamber music sensitively played by Athena Ensemble and beautifully produced (as always) by Chandos.

The Athena Ensemble was always good and this CD has the benefit of ADD sound, in my opinion far preferable to DDD and to much knob-twiddling by 'engineers'. [Leave music to musicians, for they know how to use their ears].
The late violin and 'cello sonatas are well played without the affectations and mannerisms often heard when VIP soloists appear. The Athena get the 'cello sonata right and I much prefer it to Britten and Rostropovich.
The violin sonata, too, is just about spot on if lacking a sense of depth.
The triple sonata should be good from musicians of this standing but is oddly hesitant and the fine players don't seem to be sharing much joy.
Syrinx is well played by Richard McNicol exactly to the score and his tone is gorgeous but, again, there is something lacking and I regret to say that the clarinet pieces (not great works) are not played with much conviction.
So, overall this is a 'good enough' disc but there are far better performances out there.
Perhaps if this were to be released at budget price some might award 5 stars but I really cannot.

Debussy's Secret 2 Dec. 1999
By Nicolas Leobold - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is one of the finest CD's I own. Not many people are familiar with Debussy's Chamber Music, but he composed some of the finest examples in the repertoire. The Athena Ensemble is obviously a brilliantly talented group of musicians who understand the complex and sophisticated harmonics, molodics, and rhythmics in Debussy's works, and they treat his masterpieces with love. This CD is exquisite and perfect, and will display Debussy's genius to anyone with a caring ear, while remaining subtle. Debussy's chamber music is a secret that more people should know about, and this CD is the finest collection of it.

A cherished gem 13 April 2012
By John K. Gayley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I've owned this recording forever...first on vinyl and then on CD. I've heard a number of other renditions of these various pieces, and no other ensemble seems, on the whole, to get inside them as well as the Athenians.

I wouldn't hesitate at all. Higly recommended. And, for those of you old-schoolers who still value cover art (however much reduced in size), how can you resist the lovely Monet that continues to grace the CD version?

On the pure musical merits, one other reviewer has noted that the only thing missing on this CD is a rendition of the string quartet. The reviewer is correct: adding the quartet would make this an absolute world-beater of a survey. Plus (as it stands at 55 minutes), this CD is a bit short. On the other hand, adding the string quartet at (+/-) 27 minutes probably exceeds current CD capacity constraints...and anyone can use this manque as an opportunity to augment their Ipod program with any one of the marvelous available renditions of the string quartet, usually coupled with yet something else to explore, like the scrumptious Ravel quartet.

One other (small) note: the Amazon page list performers on this CD as "Athena Ensemble and Iona Brown". The performer is actually Ian Brown (the pianist), and not, as it were, the late great violinist Iona Brown.

Debussy Chamber Music 1 April 2013
By Bob Allison - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
These performances by the Athena Ensemble for various instruments are marvelous and represent the extraordinary metaphorical wonder and impressionist mystery of Debussy's ideas. Debussy is alluring and his genius continues to delight. The recording, to my surprise, was performed in the celebrated All Saints' Church, Tooting; this venue is very unusual for chamber music performance and most often is associated with orchestral / choral works. This 1979 original analog recording is most welcome in the digital transcription. Chandos is superlative in its recording venue choices for all performances, and this one is no exception. The spacious and lush acoustic marriage of music performance and space is remarkable; this is a Chandos hallmark as they recognize the essence of its importance for the listener.
Ian Brown (piano) conveys his sensitive mastery of the composer's thoughts with artists Richard McNicol (flute), Stephen Orton (cello) and Roger Fallows (clarinet) for each work, as do all Athena Ensemble members.
Beautiful Debussy.

Must have for Debussy lovers 28 Nov. 2010

Incredibly beautiful. The Rapsodie for Clarinet is much clearer with piano accompaniment than with full orchestra. Only negative I see (or hear) is a bit of noise on the Syrinx track. Performances are top notch, unrushed, gently soothing. I wouldn't subtract two stars for not including the String Quartet, which is available in many fine performances on other CD's. This recording is a treat to listen to with a good set of headphones.

Timeless performances and music; lovely recording 29 Jun. 2001
By Ed Brickell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Hardly a day goes by that this Debussy CD isn't in my player. On a hot summer afternoon, it's as cool and refreshing as a tall glass of ice water. That's not to say the Athena Ensemble turn this music into pleasant background noise -- the performances are both subtle and vital, and feel as natural as the weather.
The Chandos recording is lovely, not nearly as heavy on the reverb as many of their CDs adding just the right touch of depth and atmosphere. Notes are sparse but adequate. And the beautiful reproduction of the Monet on the cover is the icing on the cake.
This CD is part of my life now; it might easily become a part of yours as well.
