  • “Creating Enthusiastic, Independent Readers” (Chapter 2) contains ideas for helping all children become independent readers.

Meet the Authors

Patricia M. Cunningham is a professor of education at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She has taught in various elementary grades and been a curriculum coordinator and director of reading. Her major professional goal is promoting literacy for all children.

Richard L. Allington is a professor of education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He is a past president of the National Reading Conference and a member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Dick has extensively researched effective teaching and how schools can develop effective, expert teachers.

This book has so many ides, that my copy is full of flags and markers. I have implemented a reading scheme in my school and this book has been my 'reference' book. It also has super ideas on motivating children to write. It explains the reading and writing process so well that anyone can teach a child to read using this book.

This book is a must have for primary teachers! It is chock full of practical ideas that can be implemented in your classroom. Cunningham and Allington's experience and research are evident throughout the pages of this book. It is very readable and an excellent resource as it addresses just about every need you can think of. I highly recommend it.
