Primary Drama by Michael Theodorou is a comprehensive book full of practical exercises that can be used in a wide range of situations, from small spaces in a classroom to larger drama halls. It helps teachers to gradually build up student confidence by using a myriad of easy to follow and well thought out lesson outlines that have a high fun element to encourage students to express their own creativity.
The book is divided into three parts; movement, voice and character and then further broken down into gradually developing lesson units that have clear aims and outcomes. Rhythm, timing, listening skills, following instructions, posture, and working in harmony with others are just some of the step by step aspects of drama explored. An holistic view of children's educational development is reinforced by the inclusion of cross-curricular exercises. The clear font, lay out and content make it an easy book for teachers and non-specialist people to use.
An extensive appendix includes suggestions for music, DVDs and easily accessible props that will enhance teaching and learning. There is a companion website where a number of individual scripted scenes can be downloaded to extend and complement single lessons. It is an inexpensive book that will produce many hours of well thought out lessons for a wide range of age and ability groups.

The 'Primary Drama' Classroom Gem by Michael Theodorou is a fantastic resource for all things practical and creative regarding primary drama. It provides a plethora of ideas that can be employed in drama sessions to enthuse and inspire pupils to get the very best out of each child. The book is extremely user friendly and easy to navigate, which is great for busy teachers in a rush! Each lesson idea is set out to detail the suitability range, the aims of the session and how this can be varied to suit differing needs in addition to a step by step guide through the actual lesson itself. I have used this book on a number of occasions and would highly recommend the Gem series.
