10 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Colin McCartney TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 12 Mar. 2008
Format: Audio CD
Inexplicably unavailable on CD for some considerable time, the definitive M500 best of is now back in print. In the past it's been criticised for its brevity and the choice of some of the mixes. Personally I think that the fact that there are only 9 tracks gives it a more cohesive album feel. Who wants to skip through double-CD sets looking for the best songs anyway? Absolutely nothing is wasted here. The (re-)mixes are merely Juan's very subtle attempts to update the originals - I doubt most people could even spot the difference anyway. And then there's the "robots and aliens"-themed artwork, by the quintessential Detroit techno sleeve designer, Abdul Haqq.

Just as futuristic as Kraftwerk, Juan Atkins matches them in every department - and don't forget it was he who first used the word "techno" in one of his songs ("Techno City" predates "Technopop" by 3 years).

The only disappointment is that there was never a volume 2 - compiling slightly later works such as Starlight, I See the Light, The Cosmic Courier, I Wanna Be There, The Passage etc. Still plenty of time for that though.

Classic Motown Tech. 19 July 2001
By aL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This a slamming yet funky set of 80's electro style techno. Recommended for both pasty suburbanite synth fetishists and those who like techno they can feel (dare I say it this has soul or something approaching it). If you are someone who has written off electronic music as 'soulless', peep this album right here. Juan Atkins along with Derrick May, Carl Craig, and those zany Germans Mouse on Mars are part of a handful of techno artists who make music that really communicates something 'human'(?) to the listener. That is the genius of their music and why so much other electronic muzak is just a soundtrack to an automaton's nightclub/cafe d-elevator ride to oblivion. Put this one of a feel the vibe flow through, funk not only moves, it can re-move. Dig?

The stuff the was and is still listened to in Chicago 20 Nov. 2000
By rolando - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This era of electronic music is a classic one definitely, as the music (especially "No U.F.0") has been on regular airplay in Chicago's Little Village/Pilsen Hispanic neighborhoods since the song came out back in the early 80's. Many original copies of the record are still floating around the neighborhoods. My only gripe about this CD is that there are a buncha remixes, and not enough original versions of the song. Other than that, this is the music that 60-70 y/o's are gonna be listening to in 40 years with nostalgia.

Classic 17 Dec. 1999
By Hector Rodriguez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Well what ca be said that more succincly describes this than the title. Juan Atkins is one of the founders of this music we know as techno, any serious study of dance music must include his work, and here they are the early singles all in one package. Check it out! Very difficult to find as well it shows how complete Amazon's resourses are.

Classic Understatement 6 Feb. 2000
By chis@matrik.ndo.co.uk - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Not much to say here except that Hector has is right, and this recording is unmissable. If you can find this get it - Classics is _the_ perfect example of early Detroit Techno Soul. Standout trax- Off To Battle, and No UFOs. Also look out for Atkins' work under the Infiniti name.
