A lovely, charming reissue of a 1959 `concept' album. Originally issued by RCA in the United States, the concept is simple - Werner Muller and his orchestra plays a classic, then Caterina sings a lighter `pop' version of the piece. The whole affair is delightful and refreshing and will certainly lift your spirits.

The disc includes 14 bonus tracks of Caterina's international hits, most conducted by Muller. My own favorite is "No arms can ever hold you", in this case sung in Italian as "Nessuno al mondo."

The remastering on this disc is exceptional and the stereo has never sounded better. Sepia has done it again - this enterprising company has rescued from the vaults Bea Lillie, Irene Dunne, Deanna Durbin, Julie Andrews, Mary Martin, Tommy Sands, original cast albums, etc. Thank you Sepia and I can't wait to see and hear what you'll be resurrecting next! Excellent all round!

In the 1960s I had the LP of this collection, this CD is brilliant and I have played it to death already. The bonus tracks are great too.

As far as I am concerned Caterina Valente epitomises all that's great in girl singers of the Fifties and she has maintained vocal quality to become one of Europe's greatest stars. Having been totally knocked out by THE BREEZE AND I (UK #5) way back in 1955, I have remained a fan of the exotic singer who initially made an impression beyond German borders in 1954 with the international success of MALAGUENA followed by the above hit. Along the way she conquered Las Vegas and US television shows hosted by Dean Martin, Perry Como, Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby with her ability to sing in twelve languages enabling her extraordinary talent to travel worldwide.

CLASSICS WITH A CHASER, recorded in Berlin in July 1959 preceded her American success by just a couple of years. The idea of presenting adapted classical themes by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Borodin and Debussy played by the famed Werner Muller and his Orchestra followed by Caterina's own contemporary vocal interpretations was a unique opportunity to expand her range. Bearing in mind such classics to pop numbers had often been frowned upon, I recollect no such aversion to this album which, released in the USA by RCA, did very nicely. Identifying Caterina's choices as TONIGHT WE LOVE, MY REVERIE, FULL MOON AND EMPTY ARMS, TILL THE END OF TIME, STRANGER IN PARADISE and THE THINGS I LOVE will of course reveal all these adapted classics to pop ballads had all been previously recorded by others but Miss Valente had the edge on all who preceded her supreme efforts!
