5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Rod Argent, Classically Speaking., 4 Sep 2008
By
Joy Andis "Adastria" (Seattle, WA, and London area, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Classically Speaking (Audio CD)
Having recieved an extensive musical education, I am always happy when a favourite artist of mine releases anything in line with classical music.
Over the years I have listened to numerous artists who tout their classical training, and then have been largly dissapointed when the recorded selections prove so much pretentious hype.
You won't find that here. Indeed what you WILL find is that if you never had a taste for classical piano before, you might have a change of heart. Rod picked many songs from composers well known, however, the movements are not from any that have ever made it into the known category, so you realize right away that this is someone who has extensive knowledge of classical music. And not only the period that is known to us as "Classical" but by including a piece by Sir Edward Elgar, he revealed a possible inspiration for one of his own compositions here.

Anyone who knows the history of Elgar, will even see some parallels with Rod Argent's own musical career, if I may say so.
From listening to the 1st track here: "Greig's Arietta from 'Lyric Pieces"
to the 3 pieces written by Rod himself: "Sea Picture No. 1", the slightly jazzy feeling "Fiesta" and "A fourth gymnopedie" you come away with not only an appreciation for the genre, but a huge appreciation for the artist himself.
I have to say that I feel truly honoured to have aquired such a masterpiece. It was stated by Rod in the liner notes that the album was a labour of love, well it shows. There isn't a finer recording of classical piano out there by any other artist who has crossed over from Rock n' Roll to classical quite frankly, and I have seen ALOT who have tried.
This is the real deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Argent style, 23 July 2010

Argent: one of the most underrated bands of the seventies - listen to Lothlorien from Ring of Hands or Be Glad from In Deep and see what I mean. The keyboard maestro - Rod Argent demonstrates on Classically Speaking just why Argent as a band are so good, so much due to his keyboard skill. I don't generally like classical music and solo piano usually even less. But, at a reasonable price and to see if I could overcome my classical dislike by listening to a favourite rock player, buying this album seemed a good way forward. It was worth it, very pleasant and easy on the ear, no poor tracks and Rod's own compositions fit so well into the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classy, cohesive and yet still original and unque., 2 Jan 2004
By ADK - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Classically Speaking (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic recording and stands out as something unbique and different amongst my vast music collection.
This is all solo Rod Argent, just him and a grand piano.
The sound is crisp, rich and real, not glossy or produced whatsoever. The pieces are a mixture of esteemed classical works as well as a few of Rod's originals that all fit together well in the same collection.
The end result is cohesive and classy, never stuffy or strict, it's classical in style but the bowtie and coatails are optional here.

Classicaly speaking is a real sucess as both an artist's labour of love as well as a naturaly appealing piece of music for us the listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classically Speaking Rocks!, 5 Oct 2010
By Carlisle Wheeling - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Classically Speaking (Audio CD)
Any diehard Zombies fan knows that Rod Argent is--alongside the incredibly underrated Pablo Cruise's Corey Lerios--simply one of the best longstanding keyboard players in the history of popular music. I would love to say that, after the extensive body of work the man has been involved in, that this collection of pieces comes as no surprise. Well, guess what? It DOES!

Always fresh, new, and inventive, Rod Argent never fails to amaze me with his verile, always youthful talent. If he has arthritis, he surely could fool me! His hands are as swiftly adept as they were in his early twenties, and the emotion he packs into each track is both awesome and impressive. For somebody who once stated that he lost interest in playing piano the most was when his parents paid for lessons, all I can say is a decidedly understated wow! Prodigious? You bet. There is nothing this man can't play in any genre, and that is nothing short of an enviously awe-inspiring gift. I took five years of lessons and sound like I only took five minutes.:-)

Gorgeous interpretations of mostly Chopin, Ravel, Grieg, Bach, and Elgar abound. My favorite compositions are his own, particularly his spirited jazzy "Fiesta," which is beautifully Latino inspired. Romantic, sensual, and sensitively handled, this is not an album for the eclectic rock veteran to miss. Don't like classical music very much? Then give this a try. It's worth the pleasure of drinking in.
