Finally, the definitive Baroque trumpet album,
By Graham Dixon (Xifeng, Gansu, China) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Classical Trumpet Concertos (Audio CD)
The listening public has been waiting for this disc for a long time, and it does not disappoint. Crispian, who is probably the most stylish natural trumpet player in the business, is paired with the King's Consort, who provide subtle and well-balanced support throughout the disc. The choice of repertoire is particularly pleasing - I was particularly looking forward to the Josef Haydn and Hummel performed on the keyed trumpet, and the extremely challenging Michael Haydn and Hertel concertos which use the highest register. Whether in the stratosphere or progressing stylishly through the lower register on the keyed trumpet, Crispian plays with security, grace and a highly-informed style. This disc is in many ways a counter-balance to the five discs from Niklaus Eklund, who continues to perform on the natural trumpet as if it were a piccolo trumpet, and is unevenly backed by supporting forces. Crispian, on the other hand, knows exactly what he is doing and gives all trumpet players an object lesson in how to approach this repertoire - not flashy or highly embellished (John Wallace, Mark Bennett et al should take note) but elegant, uncomplicated and simply enjoyable. I recommend this disc to any and all, especially those looking for a truly informed baroque trumpet player at his best.

soundly disappointing,
This review is from: Classical Trumpet Concertos (Audio CD)
He uses a 'natural' trumpet with a hole drilled at the nodal point - not authentic by any means. Also, while the repetoire is quite impressive the trumpet sound is thin and anemic. I was very disappointed in this disc - played it once and gave it away to someone who didn't know any better.

Classical trumpet concertos by Crispian Steele-Perkins,

This review is from: Classical Trumpet Concertos (Audio CD)
I bought this tape as Crispian Steele-Perkins had played (trumpeted!) at our daughter's wedding 20 years ago. He (very kindly) said he remembered the occasion and sent us a signed copy with good wishes.
