Product Description

Product Description

Ian Craib compellingly shows the value of studying classic thinkers such as Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Simmel alongside the more popular contemporary questions. Providing an account of the key ideas of classical social theory, Dr Craib establishes their relevance today, their enduring significance, and their contribution to understanding contemporary problems. Written in a direct, personal style, Classical Social Theory's thematic structure helps the reader compare the theorists systematically, and the book-by-book approach pays close attention to each thinker's key texts, quoting the most important passages and analysing them in a clear, straightforward way. Other student-friendly features include: * biographical details and an elementary overview of the work of Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Simmel * Dramatis Personae with brief details of the life and thought of other relevant thinkers * Glossary covering important terms and phrases used in the text Classical Social Theory is an indispensable guide to the key thinkers in Sociology for anyone new to the subject.

There are quite a few good 'introductory' books aimed at undergraduates in this area. Where Craib can be singled out for attention is that he includes the works of Georg Simmel along with the standard big three of Marx, Durkheim, and Max Weber.

Craib's overall coverage of the theories, and his attention to background information is very good, and his style is lucid and uncluttered. However, you do need to be aware that Craib has not just tried to lay out a simplified 'road map' to help you pick up the main points, he is interpreting and evaluating the things he covers as well. This might well prove to be a hindrance to less self confident students who may be tempted to simply accept Craib's arguments rather than coming to their own reasoned conclusions from the original texts (with or without the aid of a 'helper' book)

Overall then, Craib has done a very good job of presenting the basics of the theories, his arguments from them are good and well reasoned, and should be used to help you rather than be a substitute for your own reasoning. I am somewhat hesitant to recommend this for weaker students who might find Craib's arguments to be intimidating rather than a stimulus to their own thought, but if you are fairly self confident and are willing to put in the hours reading the original texts then this book will be an excellent companion for you.

Sociological theory 9 Aug 2003
By Andrea
Format:Paperback
This gives students an excellent grounding in Social Theory and is a very useful source of reference material. It's also a set book for Socicology/Social Theory.

Challenging 6 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
A very challenging and dense book, but an excellent reference point for those who understand it. I would not recommend it for anyone who has not a prior knowledge of the theorists covered, and who is not at a minimum of undergraduate level.
