Classical Jazz- A Quatre Mains,
By
This review is from: Classical Jazz a Quatre Mains (Audio CD)
Jocelyn Abbott and Laura O'Gorman have amassed a repertoire of varied programme music for 'A Quatre Mains' including a previous recording of a few of Ravel piano works. This disc of "Classical Jazz", goes further and takes works from some notable American 20th century composers, namely Gershwin and from the Broadway stage, Bernstein. The playing from both musicians whether it be Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from "West Side Story"(arr. John Musto), or Grainger's piano transcriptions of Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess" is, rhythmically sharp and intricately precise. Every nuance within the recording is amplified, staged, and balanced. Together, they have written some informative sleeve notes to accompany the recordings. On track three for example, we find that in 1932 Gershwin took a short holiday in Havana and whilst there, fascinated by the `indigenous music', wrote "Cuban Overture" or to give its proper working title, `Rhumba.' However, Gershwin felt "Cuban Overture" as the title was published would, in his view, better capture the different Cuban rhythms and instruments in `'character and intent''. The piece is played in three parts. This disc also includes a version of Gershwin's, "Rhapsody in Blue." It would be hard to fault Abbott and O'Gorman professionalism and technique. At the piano they correspond with ease and grace accordingly; each allowing the other to play and express, subtly yet overtly; the full range of tonal sounds that transmits from the keyboard and the accompanying pedalling foot work make for compelling listening. I'm not a musician and I cannot find fault with the playing. Highly recommended.
