I purchased this book in the hope that I would be learning off a great painter. Sadly, and I mean no disrespect to Chris Saper, but the paintings which Chris has painted lack any real sense of fine art. The paintings are almost cartoony, with the usual red cheeks and nose. She has demonstrated a painting from life, and a painting from a photograph, and if you look at the photograph it does not look like the painting. Perhaps I am looking to drastically improve my paintings, I thought, as from the cover that she would be a fine artist, but she's more a general artist, not painting what she sees but is painting what she knows. And this people, will not teach you ever to paint realistically. The skin tones she gives are not realistic in my opinion. I just can't face seeing so many red cheeks and noses, especially that don't exist in the reference photograph.
If you're a complete newby and have never picked up a paint brush, then this will be a good book, but if you're looking to paint with any real quality and sense of realism, then avoid this book as it will only pull you in the wrong direction. I know amateur newby painters who can paint better than the paintings Chris Saper has included in this book.
If it wasn't good for the complete beginner I would have given this 1 star. This is the first painting book I've considered selling.
