Product Description

Product Description

Building on the author's popular first book,'Painting Beautiful Skin Tones with Color & Light', this title moves readers forward in the exploration of painting beautiful skin tones. Step-by-step it expands on the original demonstrations in the first book to include: Native American, Mediterranean, Asian, Caucasian brunette and Caucasian redhead, as well as updated African American and Latino subjects. Readers will enjoy two demonstrations for each of the seven diverse subjects - one from life and one from photograph. Though oil painting is the basis of the book's demonstrations, Chris Saper's techniques are not medium specific and can apply to artists interested in all forms of portraiture.

About the Author

GREAT INSTRUCTIONS! 9 Feb 2012
By Bernie
Format:Kindle Edition
Very thoughtful teachings from the author, Ms Saper is an amazing instructor I very much enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to every level Artist who is serious in understanding the art of Oil Painting.

From skin tone colour mixing (Of various races) to studio lighting and examples of outcomes of painting under different lighting conditions to even what light bulbs/lighting rig to get for a better depiction of lighting for example North light setting, this book explains it all very clear and concise!

A very interesting look at portrait painting with an excellent section on how to take good reference photos (and how this differs from the average photo). Ideal for the improver rather than an absolute beginner as it moves quite quickly. The page presentation is a little 'arty' (the background canvas effect has led some people into thinking that their copy has been mis-printed!)and slightly distracts from the otherwise good apearence of this book.

Disappointing 2 May 2012
By Amrit
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book in the hope that I would be learning off a great painter. Sadly, and I mean no disrespect to Chris Saper, but the paintings which Chris has painted lack any real sense of fine art. The paintings are almost cartoony, with the usual red cheeks and nose. She has demonstrated a painting from life, and a painting from a photograph, and if you look at the photograph it does not look like the painting. Perhaps I am looking to drastically improve my paintings, I thought, as from the cover that she would be a fine artist, but she's more a general artist, not painting what she sees but is painting what she knows. And this people, will not teach you ever to paint realistically. The skin tones she gives are not realistic in my opinion. I just can't face seeing so many red cheeks and noses, especially that don't exist in the reference photograph.

If you're a complete newby and have never picked up a paint brush, then this will be a good book, but if you're looking to paint with any real quality and sense of realism, then avoid this book as it will only pull you in the wrong direction. I know amateur newby painters who can paint better than the paintings Chris Saper has included in this book.

If it wasn't good for the complete beginner I would have given this 1 star. This is the first painting book I've considered selling.
