Product Description

Product Description

Students of art hailed Classical Drawing Atelier, Juliette Aristidess first book, as a dynamic return to the atelier educational model. Ateliers, popular in the nineteenth century, teach emerging artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. The educational process begins as students copy masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. The many artists at every level who learned from Classical Drawing Atelier have been clamouring for more of this sophisticated approach to teaching and learning. In Classical Painting Atelier, Aristides, a leader in the atelier movement, takes students step-by-step through the finest works of Old Masters and todays most respected realist artists to reveal the principles of creating full-colour realist still-life works, portraits, and figure paintings. Rich in tradition, yet practical for todays artists, Classical Painting Atelier is ideal for serious art students seeking a timeless visual education.

A must-have! 8 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is full with enlightening information, from revealing anecdotes to technical tips. It doesn't go into any detail regarding basic artists tools, such as achieving correct proportion or anatomy, as it's particularly aimed at those who have had a fragmented art education, as I've experienced through intermittent private classes; reading books by Ruskin, Harold Speed, Robert Hale etc. Instead it takes you through the process of developing your ideas, giving you confidence with the process of creating a finished painting. So the knowledge you should already have gained from other sources is placed into a logical structure, whilst filling in gaps with information which is difficult to come by elsewhere. Highly recommended!

This really is a beautiful book. With carefully selected examples the author gives an excellent insight into timeless techniques of painting. The illustrations are excellent, the reproductions of good quality and entirely appropriate to the text. The style of the text I found to be very readable and it held my attention well. It was not too dry and it was written with assured authority. It has led me to look at the work of some of the artists featured in greater depth and it has made a considerable difference to my approach to painting. It explained many concepts I have never previously grasped about how certain effects were achieved by classical painters. It is not really a beginners book but I would heartily recommend it to any serious painter aspiring to improve their techniques, particularly if working in oils.

If you have been searching for a solid course of study that will help you improve and grow as an artist you should look no further than this practical and insightful guide. Too often books on painting are simple and shallow how-to guides that never hint at how the old masters developed the skills that allowed them to achieve mastery. This book gives you practical advice and a clear set of principles that you can use to focus your efforts. The chapters on colour and composition alone are more than worth the price of the book.
