This is not to say that all the tracks, or the artists spotlighted, are brand new; there is an enormous age range of both, from the burgeoning talent of Katherine Jones and Hayley Westenra, through the established greatness of Bryn Terfel and Kiri te Kanawa, to the archived voices of Mario Lanza and Kathleen Ferrier.
Just about all imaginable styles are covered, too - opera, film scores, virtuoso instrumentals, variations on themes, sacred music, and pop. In a nod to those of us who occasionally like to hear the world's most beautiful music given a good seeing-to there are four blatant pop/modern rhythm pieces scattered about. This is fine but, for example, Vanessa-Mae's scratch and sniff version of Sabre Dance sandwiched between Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo does sound a little extreme.
Despite these little aberrations, I think it is well compiled, and provides two and a half hours of highly pleasurable listening. If it encourages more people to investigate the releases and back-catalogue of any of the artists featured they will not be disappointed; after all, there is much more to James Galway than "Annie's Song".
