4.0 out of 5 stars Better than old cowboy movies! 25 Oct. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This set of books are written in what I suppose is a slightly strange "old western cowboy patois". It takes a couple of chapters to get used to the language, after which you quickly become wrapped in a sensitively created, turn of the century wild west world. Characters are carefully created and stories slowly develop, filled with detail about the countryside and how the story weaves its way through it. The stories have passion and violence and may be told too slowly for some. However, I found Zane Grey's story telling, distinctive and likable in an old fashioned way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic Westerns ? 10 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My wife was really pleased to find this as she is a great Western fan, Zane Grey especially , however after downloading and checking it she found to her surprise that 13 of the novels are about Baseball. This is not what I would class as Westerns but as it was cheap and the remaining stories are to her liking she is not too unhappy. I have written this review simply to warn people that all is not what it seems with this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 21 Oct. 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Nowadays I am not sure how popular Westerns are in this country; I know that they still sell well in the States. Zane Grey went on from being an avid reader to being an avid writer, most famously in the Western genre, and was a huge success, his books still being read regularly throughout the world to this day.

This collection gives you a chance to take time out and escape into a world of guns and women and imagine that you are the man with the gun.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Lone Srar Ranger 20 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book because it contains this story 'The Lone Star Ranger', this is an absolute classic western, up there alongside Shane. If you are a western fan and you have not read 'The Lone Star Ranger', then its an absolute must. In my opinion this is Zane Grey at his best.

Quite by chance I decided to try out Zane Grey and now lament that I had never come across this author earlier in life. I have only completed the first three novels in this giant collection and at the moment enjoying the forth novel "The Rainbow Trail." Without providing any spoilers all I can say is that Zane Grey must have had a deep love for the countryside and wild life (as in animal wild life) of the American west in the late 1800's. In loving detail he describes the various backdrops to his enthralling stories. You could almost imagine yourself there. In equal detail he brings to life the various characters that populate his novels. their thoughts, their feelings, their motivations. I am looking forward to reading "Riders of the Purple Sage" as this story in particular is reputed to have set the pattern for many other western classics and films. if you have a liking for good adventure yarns with romance thrown in and characters that are 3D rather than just cardboard cut outs , then I would thoroughly recommend reading these classics. If you use kindle then I would recommend downloading the trial version first as you get more than one novel to read. But be warned once you have read the first novel you will be hooked . . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic westerns 23 Oct. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I find that like most people when starting a new book or story, it takes me a couple of chapters to get into the setting. With these westerns from Zane Grey I seem to be getting into the theme a lot quicker as the scene seems to be set out and give’s a very good picture of where you are, a bit like watching it on TV which may sound a bit daft. Once started on a story I can't seem to be able to put it down and just I keep on going. I have read about five of the storeys now and find that if I don't put them away for a while I will never get anything done around the house, I love them so much. In fact I have been very near to some of the places in these books, which might be why I find these this so exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars ZANE GREY 28 Dec. 2012

He was a master author of "old style" western novels. I was a young man when I first discovered him and it has taken me 50 years to find him again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some are not what I would call a "real" Western.
I enjoyed some of these books - the "real" Westerns. I have only red 5 so far but look forward to reading the rest.
