5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a classic, 6 July 2009
By Lesley Jones (Cardiff, UK) - See all my reviews
I've been walking in the Brecon Beacons for many years now and while I have used other books and done my own thing too, if I am looking for inspiration on where to walk in the Beacons it is Chris Barber's classic and classy book to which I return. It has been a constant inspiration. The walks are well described, varied and cover the whole of the park from the Black mountains in the East (even bits in England) to The Black Mountain in the West. This book, the two OS maps of the area and a compass are all that is needed to explore this fascinating region of S Wales on foot. What I really like about this book compared with many of its rivals is that it includes longer and more challenging walks as well as some shorter or less demanding routes. So it can be used by both experienced and less experienced walkers and one can work up to some of the longer routes after seeing how one feels about the shorter ones. It is also comprehensive covering all the major peaks, ridges and other features of the area, providing walks for all seasons.

The book surprisingly hasn't dated much though one or two details have changed, inevitably. And my annotated copy has comments about not trying to ford the Afon Twyrch after rain (wet feet or a detour) and even with the addition of a GPS, finding the Queen's Head in the Vale of Ewyas has proved quite challenging more than once. But these are small issues and I for one owe Chris Barber a big Thanks for enabling me to enjoy the Brecon Beacons National Park on foot with confidence when I didn't know it at all: it is a testament to the book and its walks that I still use it when thinking about where I might go even though I now know the area well. So don't be put off by the rather dull appearance of this volume compared with its rivals - if you want some serious walking in the Brecon Beacons this is the book you should buy.
