Great book providing an insight into the Video Game consoles and Home Computers of the 70s, 80s and 90s. There is a follow up part 2 that covers most of the ones that are missed however this is not on the Kindle yet. The Kindle edition has the text of the printed edition but misses many of the pictures especially the screenshots. Some of the colour and atmosphere is lost from the large format printed version. It is however still a good read and better than spending over £100 the speculators are currently asking for the book as this is now out of print and hard to come by.

This is really a reference tool for those with interest in Retro Gaming. Every page, for me, is some childhood memory revisited. It is also exceptionally well written and well-researched. eBooks of this quality are rare.

Very good read with a lean towards Europe 11 May 2012

I have read many history style books based on video games. This one took the approach of systematically looking through many different types of hardware with which to play video games. It has many interviews with people involved in the design of the hardware and is generally quite in depth. After each chapter the writers put fourth their favorite games on each of the pieces of hardware reviewed. I say that it has a lean towards Europe because many of the interviews are with non-American/Japanese designers. This is a breath of fresh air after reading so many first hand accounts of the Japanese or American contributions to the industry.
