If you are not familiar with Ike and Tina, then this is an excellent compilation to start with. There is nothing wrong with the album itself but it is exactly the same as so many ike and tina compilations released by EMI/Capitol in the past. If you want something less familiar, get "funkier than a mosquito's tweeter" on Stateside Records or the original albums released by BGO.

The only reason this album didn't get the full five stars is on track seven, if you listen very carefully you can hear Ike saying 'sing better or I'll punch you right in your tits Tina'. It's only very quiet as they obviously tried to edit it out, but at around 1minute 26 seconds into the song it is there. He sounds like a man possessed but to be honest the singing did improve from 1min27 till the end of the song. So love him or hate him, he did improve her voice. The delivery was quick, which was nice too.

For the true music fan 8 Feb 2004
By B. M Peters - Published on

This is a great compilation. This is an amazing testiment to ageless power of Tina Turners Talent. I would give this album 5 stars because of it's vast diversity. Showing all dimensions of the queen of rock. From Gut Buckett R&B,to Rauchy southern rock to gospel laden power ballads. This album has a little bit for everyone. The Rock lover, the blues lover, the Sappy tear jerkin ballad lover and all the differant styles of the vastly diverse R&B Genre. One of the key cuts (for me) was th Gospel-southern soul ballad "A love like yours" A truly passionate and rare recording for 2 reasons. The song demonstrates a tender kittenish side to the normally rough & gutsy Tina. 2- this is a rare recording and only available(to my knowledge) on this compilation album.

True Soul 5 Feb 2004
By B. M Peters - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This album is amazing. It shows a differant type of soul singer.
One who is throaty, gutsy and gravelly (most females follow in the tradtion of Aretha or Diana ross). Thisa album shows all of her dimensions. It show hers soft side on songs like
"Drift Away", her rock'n'roll raucousness on "Proud Mary" the grity gut buckett R&B "I idolise you" and the sexyness"I've been lovin you too long". The ballad "A love like yours" is a stand out. It shows not only her tender kittenish side, it shows her roots in gospel. One listen will send shivers up your spine and a tear to your eye. If you like true soul, raw, unrestrained, intense and spine chilling you will like this album. Her vocal stylings register close to those of Anne Peebles, Millie Jackson,Gladys Knight and even Mary J. Blige.
Memory Lane for Rhythm and Blues 1 Dec 2013

Lots of the old hits by the duo before Tina broke lose and went solo. Two of my favorites are "I Idolize You" and "Nutbush City Limits." Many of the songs were featured in the movie starring Angela Bassett as Tina.
