5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book! 30 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a real gem of a book and worth every single penny! It covers everything you need to know to start the learning process of tailoring fine garments. The photo's are slightly grainy and look almost photocopied at times but this really doesn't detract from the skills learnt from them and the text. As with everything in life, this book is designed for you to learn the steps necessary to create a beautiful looking and professional suit but only practice, practice and more practice will make that happen. This book covers pattern adjustments for individual figure problems, pockets, hand sewn buttonholes, jackets, waistcoats, trousers, a gorgeous French Fly zipper insertion method, to scale patterns for the above, etc. etc. I am not a trained tailor but can say, honestly, that this book can help you to make wonderfully professional results if you are prepared to practice, do things in the correct order and not expect "speed tailoring" shortcuts - if you do want speed tailoring, then you won't get past the first 5 pages! I would have given 10 stars if I could!!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent guide 10 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is like getting the teaching notes of an expert. Clearly presented in two columns to a page. The diagrams are excellent. The photographs are not good, but mostly I find them unnecessary. This is not a beginners book except for the determined. It is a book to lift a good crafts person to an excellent one. The knowledge between the 2 covers comes from a life time of actually doing it. The initial guidance on measuring the client and adapting a purchased pattern are superb and very insightful into human vanity. Read carefully the guidance on the structural fabrics to purchase before setting out on the cutting of the top fabric. Everything is reasoned and explained. This is not a coffee table book or one to dip into at bedtime. It deserves serious study and then use it to refer to frequently as you work through making a jacket, trousers or waistcoat. The results will be better than achieved before studying the book. Much the best book on tailoring and I do own others. This is specifically for men and explains how to solve the fitting problems in mens anatomy. The other tailoring books all seem to be aimed at womens wear and are not as good at the technique and finish as this book. I have also not found another tailoring book tackling fit.
