Roy Harper has been making fine music and joining it to beautiful poetry and intelligent ideas since the early 60s. On June 12, 2011, he celebrates his 70th birthday, and the Festival Hall is already sold out (for November 5) for a celebration of his attaining this great age, yet it is a fair and safe bet that far less will be made of the event than the shenanigans surrounding his American contemporary's arrival at the same life-landmark.
Watching this DVD (of a specially-arranged-for-filming performance) simply deepens the mystery surrounding the reasons why Roy is not acknowledged widely for his genius. One only has to read the reviews across the decades to note how sincerely he is respected by his fellow-artists yet, for some reason, he simply doesn't seem to merit the airtime afforded to others. Conspiracy theories abound, of course. Perhaps he just presents too much of a challenge to meejur types bred to ingest and regurgitate pap.
Each track on the DVD is a classic Harper song; each is brilliantly performed. Roy's voice may have deepened over the years, but it still has real quality, and his guitar work is as magical as ever it was. Both as an introduction for newcomers and as a keepsake for longtime afficionados, this recording is worth far more than its modest price. Buy it, enjoy it, and spread the word.
