I was lucky enough to attend the recording of this very intimate Roy Harper performance at the weekend. I have to say that despite having seen the highly esteemed "legendary folk voyager" (thanks Mojo) many times over the years both at Glastonbury and the 100 Club, and more recently supporting Joanna Newsom at the Festival Hall, this has to be one of the best performances I've been to.

The small and appreciative audience (no-one further than 10 feet away) were treated to a selection of gems from the back catalogue, interspersed with much tuning of the acoustic guitar, intimate explanations of some of the songs and typically dry banter. I would challenge anyone not to be moved by the performances of Another Day, Twelve Hours of Sunset and Pinches of Salt.

If you aren't familiar with Roy Harper's work, or have just heard him being recommended by the likes of Led Zeppelin, this is a perfect introduction - and if you are familiar, you will love it. Highly, highly recommended.

HOW TIME FLIES 15 Jun 2011

Having seen Roy Harper on many occasions since the late sixties I cannot recall him looking and sounding so relaxed and happy. His song selection reflects a repertoire of personal experiences and astute observations of life and the world delivered with his inimitable lyrics and superb guitar playing built up from over 50 years of treading the boards. At times I had to pinch myself that I was watching and hearing a man approaching 70 rather than when I saw him over 40 years ago (no smoke on this occasion). He has retained the ability to put across his messages with the same use of his voice, soft to powerful with characteristic use of falsetto to make his point. Explanations, many humorous, introduce numbers and add to the meaning of each song although his lyrics are clear and delivered perfectly. It is hard to put into words the genius of this man. His song selection is hand-picked and all played
stunningly. From One Man Rock and Roll Band to 'the old cricketer' it is impossible to find fault as all are so brilliantly rendered. The small audience (also matured) add to the intimacy. This is an outstanding performance from an oustanding unique musician. As a previous reviwer has pointed out, he has not had the recognition he deserves. John Peel and Bob Harris knew (dig out the BBC tapes). I cannot praise this highly enough and apart from urging people to buy it, it may provide the impetus and stimulation to listen to his past recorded material. His web site is useful. Don't leave the crease yet, please Roy, there are hopefully plenty of other days to come.

Roy Harper has been making fine music and joining it to beautiful poetry and intelligent ideas since the early 60s. On June 12, 2011, he celebrates his 70th birthday, and the Festival Hall is already sold out (for November 5) for a celebration of his attaining this great age, yet it is a fair and safe bet that far less will be made of the event than the shenanigans surrounding his American contemporary's arrival at the same life-landmark.
Watching this DVD (of a specially-arranged-for-filming performance) simply deepens the mystery surrounding the reasons why Roy is not acknowledged widely for his genius. One only has to read the reviews across the decades to note how sincerely he is respected by his fellow-artists yet, for some reason, he simply doesn't seem to merit the airtime afforded to others. Conspiracy theories abound, of course. Perhaps he just presents too much of a challenge to meejur types bred to ingest and regurgitate pap.
Each track on the DVD is a classic Harper song; each is brilliantly performed. Roy's voice may have deepened over the years, but it still has real quality, and his guitar work is as magical as ever it was. Both as an introduction for newcomers and as a keepsake for longtime afficionados, this recording is worth far more than its modest price. Buy it, enjoy it, and spread the word.
