Caravan are one of the big names associated with the Canterbury Scene branch of the Progressive Rock genre. This Classic Rock Legends DVD sees the band reforming to play a selection tracks mostly drawn from their much loved early albums.

It was recorded on December 4th 2010 in a cramped 7x14 meter television studio in London, for an intimate feeling but televised gig in front of a small group of very lucky fans.

I was a little skeptical of how good this might be considering that it was recorded for terrestrial British Television and didn't have my hopes up in terms of the audio visual side o things. Luckily this skepticism proved unnecessary.

The first thing that will hit you is the surprisingly high picture quality, this is a very good looking DVD. Additionally there is a lot of (restrained and tasteful) camera movement and all musicians are covered well from more than one angle, leaving an impression of professionalism and quality.

The line-up features Pye Hastings on guitars and vocals, as well as Geoff Richardson on viola (and just about everything else too, including Gardening Shears) Jim Leverton on bass, Jan Schelhas on Keyboards and the excellent new drummer Mark Walker, with original drummer Richard Coughlan back on stage for some additional percussion.

The band really deliver in terms of performance and put in a good show all around, tracks like `The Unauthorised Breakfast Item,' are bursting with energy, Pye's voice is on top form and each musician goes at their instruments like a band half their age.

Highlights include a funky rendition of `Memory Lane, Hugh,' from 1973's For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night album and brilliant versions of `Golf Girl,' and the rousing twenty minute epic `Nine Feet Under Ground,' from 1971's In The Land Of Grey And Pink.

With great sound, great picture and especially a great performance; this DVD is an absolute must have for existing Caravan fans and would make a fine introduction for prospective fans too. So if you are a fan of prog with big keyboard solos, occasional violin and flute centric moments along with lots of atmosphere and attitude then Caravan are certainly a proposition that you should check out.

Stunning comeback 11 Jun 2011
I was lucky enough to attend this recording, courtesy of the generosity of my wife and bank manager.

Here is what I wrote at the time

I was lucky enough to be on the front row for both shows (I also saw the John Lees' Barclay James Harvest gig), I could literally reach out and touch their microphone stands. The venue was very intimate, but not claustophobic, so it had a great atmosphere. There was a bit of jiggling around to get the audience away from some of the camera angles but after a short delay the managing director escorted a frail Richard Coughlan to his stool on the stage in what was one of the most emotional demostrations of fan appreciation I've witnessed. Caravan took all of 2 seconds to work their magic, in a 75 minute set they squeezed in songs from their entire career, including a couple of new ones which sounded great, and capped it off with a flawless rendition of Nine Feet Underground. Hello Hello and Why Why Why (I wish I were stoned...) were there as was Headloss and a few other classics. Nightmare stands out as a post-classic era gem, as do Smoking Gun and The Unauthorised Breakfast Item, which just shows how witty the songwriting is. Geoffrey took some of the lead guitar parts formerly taken by the now departed Doug Boyle and certainly did them some justice, he also played the infamous Caravan electric spoons and garden shears for our delectation. Mark Walker did a terrific debut on drums, I spoke to him afterwards and he said he learned to play drums by drumming along to Richard Coughlan's parts. Jan and Jim were excellent too. I met them all afterwards and whilst trying to avoid that embarrassing habit of talking drivel the free wine and the excitement took over a bit. Absolutely first class performance by one of my 3 favourite bands.

As a footnote I had a chance to tak to the guys after the show, they had a day's rehearsal a month before the gig, then planned 3 days in Kent rehearsing before just before the recording. It snowed and Pye and Jan had to dig themselves out of their homes to head south to Kent, only for the studios they were rehearsing in to get snowed in. They had 1 ull day and a couple of hours to rehearse, a departed band member and a new band member since their last gig 5 years previously and rearranged some songs and learned 2 brand new songs.

Awesome performance, not perfect but it shows what a great band the public have let pass them by for the last 42 years.

Welcome Return 16 Jun 2011

I only discovered Caravan in the 1990s, when they had already long since split up. Luckily, they reformed and I saw them in 2005. It was a mind blowing experience. Sadly, they split up shortly afterwards again, but returned for an intimate show in a TV studio. I'm not normally a fan of music DVDs, but this takes me back to the time I saw Caravan. The lineup is slightly different now - Richard Coughlan has apparently had a stroke and can no longer player, but the replacement drummer does a stunning job and clearly loves the music he is playing. There is no longer another guitarist, but that suits me fine as it means we get more of Geoffrey Richardson on various instruments, including flute on a gorgeous rendition of I wish I were stoned! Jan Schelhaas does a fine job on keys and organ, and Jim Leverton provides vocals and bass. Coughlan is present on percussion. The whole gig is so energetic it left me tired watching it! I hope this lineup continues, as I'd love to see them again in the flesh.
