A decent four disc set of classic Fox films that are all highly dependent on your interest in the source material. That interest, though, could lead to disappointment as most of these films pale in comparison to the books they are based on. On the plus side, this set includes a wealth of bonus materials, as well as a fifth film.
Anna Karenina (1948/B&W/112 minutes/Fullscreen)
Vivian Leigh stars in this better than average adaptation of Tolstoy's classic tale of love, lust, family and tragedy. Special features include an engaging documentary on the life of Tolstoy, a featurette concerning his political and literary legacy, a restoration comparison and a still gallery.
A Farewell To Arms (1957/Color/152 minutes/Widescreen)
Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones star in this overwrought Cinemascope treatment of Hemingway's WWI classic. Special features are limited to three "Movietone News" newsclips and the original trailer.
Les Miserables (1935/B&W/110 minutes/Fullscreen)
Fredric March and Charles Laughton star in this excellent 1935 version of Victor Hugo's classic tale of injustice and redemption. Special features are limited to a restoration comparison and a still gallery.
Les Miserables (1952/B&W/106 minutes/Fullscreen)
Michael Rennie and Debra Paget star in another excellent version of this much loved story. Special features include an interesting documentary on Eugene Vidocq, the French criminal-turned-investigator who inspired the original story, a restoration comparison, the original trailer and two still galleries. This two-film disc is easily the best in the set.
The Sun Also Rises (1957/Color/130 minutes/Widescreen)
Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, Errol Flynn, Mel Ferrer and Eddie Albert star in this midling interpretation of Hemingway's meditation on the lost generation. Special features include a commentary track, a making-of featurette, a featurette on the many film versions of Hemingway's works, an audio conversation with the film's director, a restoration comparison, the original trailer and a still gallery.
