I really enjoyed this book but I hate the way Amazon reduces its UK taxes. There is wonderful writing here but we all need to shout loud until Amazon pays its fair share. I really enjoyed this author's earlier books and if you did, why don't you log in and leave 10 more reviews like this today. Tell Amazon to sign that cheque or forever lose my respect and the respect, no doubt, of this very fine author."

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this eclectic mix of American and British writers - eclectic, that is, within the strict confines of this straitened genre. Reading these stories again recalled the illicit thrill of reading them as a youngster - not quite under the bed covers with a flashlight, but almost. Weird but not whacko, they were pulp fiction years before Pulp Fiction. Why, some of the stories gave birth to movies and some even to mini-genres of their own. Consider The Beast with Five Fingers: a short story, first published in an anthology in 1927, it later became a movie, which itself "inspired" the movie The Hands of Orlac, later remade as Mad Love, before Oliver Stone tried his ... errr ... hand at The Hand. And the TV Addams Family would have been a lesser thing had we seen more of Thing T. Thing. Read this book urgently, not so much to be terrified, but more to relish returning to the source of so much of our popular culture.
