Tremendous,
By
This review is from: Classic FM Presents Alfie Boe (Audio CD)
This CD is fantastic. I've been a vague fan of Opera for years but I often get put off by the voices of, in particular, male performers. Technically they sound great, but there's just something, some quality that stops me really enaging with them. This guy has a tremendous voice. There's an honest quality to it, a complete lack of pretention.
I first heard about him on Radio 4 when they were discussing his career and his discovery whilst working as a car mechanic in the North of England. They played a snatch of Core 'Ngrato, the second track from the album, and I was just blown away. I'd even go so far as to say his version of Nessun Dorma is better than that of Pavarotti who, let's be honest, made it famous in the last couple of years. I'd definitely recommend it. He's one to watch out for in future.

Considerable potential,

This is Alfie Boe's first album, and as such is very interesting, in that it indicates his strengths for the future. The voice has a pleasing degree of depth and power, although just at the moment is perfect for Mozart. He also has a considerable affinity for Puccini, but needs plenty of stage experience to get to know the characters he is singing. This young man should be destined for a starry career in opera, and is one to watch closely.

A note of appreciation,

Just wanted to add to the chorus of approval for this CD. It's just his first album but glowing praises are already being sung about this man's voice. I can only agree with them. A great deal of power combined with excellent range and (critically) superb definition. I think it's too early to say 'British Pavarotti' but the fact you'd even contemplate it speaks volumes for the man's obvious talent. Look forward to the next one Alfie.
