The Classic FM `Movie Themes' 3 CD box sets appear on a annual basis. In 2006 we had `Classic FM at the Movies', in 2007 there was the `Sequel' and now we have the 2008 `Ultimate'.
The first and sequel sets were a good choice of music from popular films, the sequel making a particularly good buy because it consisted of tracks from a different selection of films than on the original.
The `Ultimate' title of this latest release implies that it's either the best one or the final one, but in my opinion it's neither. It's not the best for there is a considerable overlap with the music from the previous Classic FM Movie CDs, and it probably won't be the final one of its type thanks to the vast back catalogue of film music available. Disappointingly, if we exclude the three bonus tracks then around two thirds of the remaining 34 tracks are from films featured on the previous two Classic FM sets.
It should also be noted that as with the previous Classic FM Movie CDs the music may not be the exact version as that used in the film. This is made clear on the rear of the box, and while this is usually due only to a different orchestra or artist than in the original film rather than a wildly differing sound, those with a concern over this would be better choosing the original film soundtrack CD.
The three bonus tracks featuring Myleene Klass, Jonathan Ansell and Hayley Westenra may convince some to go for this set, but those who have the previous two releases should expect some repetition.
Considering the price this is a good value 3CD set for those who don't already have the first two. Given the huge choice of film music available though I would like to have seen far more new material used to make it a more attractive continuation in the series. More satisfactory perhaps would be an annual release of music from that particular year, such as a `Classic FM Movie Music 2008'.
The box of popcorn on the front cover may look nice for some people, but for others it may seem stale.
