4.0 out of 5 stars Orchestral Heaven, 19 May 2004
This review is from: Classic FM Hall of Fame - The Great Composers (Audio CD)
An album that captures the genius of many composers, with a superb range of classical compositions to satisfy every classical fan. Classic FM has gathered the cream of classical talent, and produced four great CDs that cover the masterpieces of the ages. The arrangements combine to form a perfectly sound collection, one that ebbs and flows like the movement of the instruments. The orchestra's are taken from all four corners of the globe, from the great London Philharmonic Orchestra, to the orchestra's of Prague and Philadelphia. Fill your living room with the sound of real music!

4.0 out of 5 stars A wise purchase for classical dilettantes, 7 May 2006

When it comes to Classical music I'm a populist through and through. Aficionados of Classical music will probably despise me in the same way I despise people who think the world revolves around Robbie Williams and Will Young and quite right too. But I do enjoy a bracing blast of classical music every now and then and much of the stuff that I've come to love over the years is on this CD.
Ravels "Bolero" is slightly over familiar thanks to that pair of skaters but what a piece of music. The way it builds upon one simple yet infectious refrain, adding layers of instrumentation. It's an approach that has been copied through out music history right into the avant garde and particularly ambient .Brian Enos "Discreet Music" or Global Communications "14.31" are pertinent examples of this. Incidentally I may have imagined this, but when I was young I swear I saw a cartoon on TV using Bolero centred on life evolving from a tiny microbe in a bottle to rampaging herds of dinosaurs. If by some miracle anyone reads this and can confirm that this does/did indeed exist please let me know.
That public service broadcast out of the way I will return to the music here. One surprise is the mixture of more contemporary artists such as Michael Nyman (Whose Film Music CD contains some exquisite moments) and John Williams, thankfully no relation to the anti- Christ Robbie, though I do find their inclusion slightly irksome for some reason. Then again Classical music didn't stagnate when we entered the 20th Century so why shouldn't they be incorporated. I do draw the line however at "Fanfare For The Common Man". Some of the more traditional tracks I am unfamiliar with and some are rather ponderous and prosaic. Some, however, are wonderfully effulgent pieces and the album is arranged so it ebbs and flows like a truly epic composition should, moving gracefully from light to shade and from tranquil to boisterous.
A few of my favourites are missing, the sort of thing that would reduce Classical snobs to fits of giggles, if indeed they are capable of fits of giggles. Any thing from the The Peer Gynt Suite, preferably Morning , The Blue Danube, Waltz Of The Flowers, Largo or March Of The Toreadors would have been very nice indeed but the inclusion of The March Of The Capulets is most welcome, tremendously stirring piece of music as it is. Gets the blood racing as much as much as any That Petrol Emotion riff.
It, s rare for me to gripe that something isn't prevalent enough for the uninitiated but as a classical dilettante as opposed to a connoisseur this would have suited me better if it had included all the stuff everyone knows, but I hardly think that is the point of this compilation and there may well be something better suited to that end in circulation. I obviously haven't discovered it yet. But till then this wonderfully performed and arranged selection will more than suffice.

This review is from: Classic FM Hall of Fame - The Great Composers (Audio CD)
The Classic FM Hall of Fame - The Great Composers is classical music in a juke box. What this literally means is a large number of prominent great classical acts to embrace their names with the arena are featured within this 4 DISC compilation and this would delight avid followers of classical music. Why not select your favourite track and enjoy the beauty and splendour of classical music?

The classical acts range from Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, Rossini, Strauss and heaps more. From listening to the tracks, you can clearly understand why these legendary names in the classical arena deserve to cement a position as greatest composers of all time. They know how to play classical music and really absorb listeners into the music, as if you are in another world. The talents and unique skills of these great musician have gained widespread praise by many critics. Classical music magazines, books, Classical Fm and experts have played an instrumental role in bulding this awareness of their extraordinary talents. The album is a perfect platform to promote their musical masterpieces to listners.

The classical music featured in this compilation is really relaxing and smoothing. The music you hear in this album, can be described as instrumental orientated with the background sounds of violins, piano, flute, and many more instruments . Classical music poured less emphasis on vocalist skills and very much on how well you can play an instrument. These guys have really mastered the skills of a playing an instrument at its finest and reflect the real beauty and essence of music. It just wonderful and a real pleasure to listen to.

If you want an interesting and varied selection of classical music, buy this album. It ties in with the title of the review "Classical music in a jukebox" if you know what I am getting at.
