Wonderful, intense blues,
By
This review is from: The Classic Early Recordings: 1951-1956 (Audio CD)
This 3-disc set, with its numerous alternate takes and various somewhat obscure selections, is for the serious Elmore James-fan. A more casual blues fan would probably be better off with a good single-disc collection or two, but if you are indeed a serious fan, you really, really need this very well produced box set, complete with extensive liner notes, biographical information and rare colour pictures. Elmore James only recorded for about eight years, from 1951-1956 for the Bihari Brothers, and again from 1960-1963 for Bobby Robinson, but his legacy features such indispensable blues classics as "Dust My Broom", "The Sky Is Crying", "Standing At The Crossroads", "Sho' Nuff I Do", "Blues Before Sunrise", "and "It Hurts Me Too". These three CDs - contained in a handsome box - start off with Elmore's lone 1951 recording, a reading of Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom", with Sonny Boy Williamson II playing harp. Other highlights include lesser-known tracks such as "No Love In My Heart", "Hawaiian Boogie" and "Strange Kinda Feeling" (which is featured in an exhausting six takes!).

Elmore James: The Classic Early Recordings,
This review is from: The Classic Early Recordings: 1951-1956 (Audio CD)
Marvellous stuff! Elmore James never had very much of a career and was probably his own worst enemy for most of the career he did have. However, in that career he did produce some of the greatest modern blues there ever were and many of them are on this set.
Included are the original iconic Dust My Broom for Trumpet and all the stuff he produced for the various Bihari Brothers labels. There are repeated versions of Dust My Broom under various guises, as there were throughout his career, but no matter, it always excites, however many times you hear it. All the music is tough, driving and raw, with impassioned vocals and guitar work halfway to heaven or hell. There are repeated takes on Volumes 2 and 3 which may put some people off. However I find them a fascinating example of the way the band were pushed into producing the version Elmore wanted. Underneath the impassioned exterior he was a very very capable musician. The supporting bands include people like Sonny Boy Williamson 2, Ike Turner. J.T.Brown, Johnny Jones, Odie Payne, Willard McDaniel and Earl Palmer, all of whom are on top form. There are no passengers. The set is well produced and comes with a detailed set of notes, including discography with dates and personnels, an essay covering Elmore's life in the relevant period and a piece about attempts to trace those who knew him in Canton, Mississippi in 1983 This set covers all his earlier work. If you buy The Complete Fire and Enjoy Recordings which includes his later work then you have virtually everything Elmore ever did. And you should.

The Complete Early Recordings 1951-1956: Elmore James - Classic blues from one of the greats.,
By
This review is from: The Classic Early Recordings: 1951-1956 (Audio CD)
Elmore James had been a working musician for many years before his recording debut under his own name with 1951's Dust My Broom. He had by this time developed his own unique style of heavy, loud, aggressive blues, almost a proto rock sound, and honed it to perfection The resultant debut was a powerhouse of a record, and laid the foundations of a classic recording legacy from the great man. This set collects all of Elmore's recordings in the period '51 to '56. It is exhausting in it's completeness. There are many alternative takes, and while these sometimes feel a bit repetitive they provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of some of his most classic tracks. Many of the tracks were re-recorded for different labels later in his career (up until his untimely death in 1963) and most of these can be found on King of the Slide Guitar: The Complete Chief & Fire Sessions which is a perfect companion to this set. But for my money these originals with their raw power and sense of innovation are the better takes. A set well worth getting for any serious blues fan.
