5.0 out of 5 stars classic of sci fi comic 22 Sep 2007
By RAMON
Format:Hardcover
This was my first contact with scifi comic, and I fell in love with it.
The plot is simple: an extraterrestrial ship falls to earth, carrying desperate messengers looking for help against the Kruels: a race that invades their planet to make them slaves. Dan Dare and his friends embark in the task of defending them, and travel to the planet in question.

The story has all the innocent assumptions of those times: corageous goys, fist play, decission, energy, virility, loyalty. It makes one wish that cyberpunk never existed.

And then the wonderful drawing lines, flowing, creating a whole new planet and ecosystem. And the colours, bright, clear, rich... No wonder this comic has been re edited several times.

Heartily recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old School Sci-Fi Classic Spectacular 31 July 2008
Format:Hardcover
I cannot recommend this enough. Faithfully reproduced from the original material, this series has a special place in my heart.
Fans from Star Wars and Indiana Jones films, who also like comics/graphic novels should read this.
It's very episodic in nature, because it was written for a weekly magazine, the Eagle. But the scope and the ideas of author Frank Hampson are very much visionary. There is a big overall storyline. And although one of the reviewers here deduct a point, because you don't get the whole story, the sequel "Rogue Planet" is already out. And when you read this book you are hooked anyway, so buy them together.
You get also, with every album in this series, lots of background information and interviews with the makers of this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be warned this is not the full story 15 May 2008
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Whilst I agree with the quality of the reproduction I feel potential readers should be warned that this is not a complete story. About two thirds of the way through the book the "Man from Nowhere" finishes and you have a panel saying "This story is continued in 'Rogue Planet'".
The rest of the book then has a couple of shorter episodes which are worth viewing as historic items though the penmanship is not as good as the major story.
I was disappointed as I thought I was getting an entire story in one book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best story so far 13 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
I discovered Dan Dare two years ago and immediately fell in love with the drawing style of Frank Hampson. Adoring the very specific art of composing every single picture I always get the feeling of watching a movie because of the different chosen 'camera angles'. What a brilliant artist he was! No wonder this series is reckoned as "the greatest British comic strip of all time".

Since this is already the sixth story after Dan and his pals found their way into the solar system the drawing and narrating style has been brought to perfection. After Dan's crew encountered life on Mars, Venus, Mercury and the Saturn Moons, they now experience life from outside of our known solar system. I was baffled how long the team around Frank Hampson developed the introduction of the new alien character 'Lero the Crypt'. In the original publishing scheme you had to wait 4 weeks from the first glimpse until you could meet the new alien in full. True cinematic narration!

As we'd have expected from him Dan goes boldly with the visitors to save their planet and fight the unknown evil. We get to know new alien races, new space ships and completely new technologies such as travelling faster than the speed of light!

I wasn't disappointed as one of the previous reviewers when the story was interrupted to be continued in the next story "Rogue Planet" because I knew before that this was part of a trilogy which would end with "Reign of the Robots". Gladly I bought all three volumes at the same time so continuous reading is secured!
