Theorists are examined within their historical and sociological framework and the text provides an analysis of developments in sociological thought and research. The text is divided into four main sections: Part One, Origins and Concepts, surveys the history of the discipline of sociology and examines key themes which have influenced sociological theorising and investigation, in particular, social control, culture and socialisation. I bought this title as it is a compulsory text on my sociology course, and having read it I now know why. Accessible and, in the most part, relevant to today, it brought clarity to a number of cloudy areas. Definately a must for all social science students, as it offers a little more insight into the basic principles without getting too weighed down with theory or opinion. Thank god it was recommended as now even I have a chance at passing !

Very readable writing.

I used this book for additional reading and reference for a course in Sociology at Penn State. It is very well written, easy to read (usually means short length of subject) and gives varying views of social observations of differing subjects and cultures. I recommend it for reading as my text book has too much stuff to remember.
