Although usually convinced that I am 27, I admit that I must be getting old - because all my heart-throbs are actually dead! Cary Grant is number one for absolute gorgeousness, in my opinion. Couple that with perfect comic timing and wry sophistication and you begin to understand why he was so successful for so long. When he was allowed to be himself and display his unique magic, Grant was unbeatable, especially in light comedies. Some of the films in this collection have dated quite badly, but others are as fresh today as they were when they were first made. The charm of old movies is that they belong to an era that is safely in the past and whose outcome is known, so that they evoke a sense of security and nostalgia, even though actually living at that time was so difficult for so many. They are fun and strangely comforting to watch and Grant makes you feel that you have something of his sophistication and sly humour yourself, because he clearly enjoys himself and you are sharp enough to be able to get the jokes and share the enjoyment. I recommend this set.
