DVD Description

This indispensable box set combines two timeless literary adaptations: THE RAILWAY CHILDREN starring Jenny Agutter and Bernard Cribbins and based on the book by E Nesbit (Five Children and It); and SWALLOWS & AMAZONS starring Virginia McKenna and based on the book by Arthur Ransome.

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN tells the story of the Waterburys, whose happy middle-class existence is shattered one night when their father leaves the family home without explanation, in the company of two mysterious strangers. Falling on hard times, Mother moves them to a cottage in the country where the children become fascinated with the nearby railroad. Waving faithfully to the passengers everyday, their vigilance and courage helps prevent an accident and their kind-heartedness soon wins them many friends – not least of all The Old Gentleman who may be able to help them solve the mystery of their father’s disappearance…. An instant classic on its release, the film made a star out of Jenny Agutter and has proved to be enchanting to children and adults alike. THE RAILWAY CHILDREN is based on the novel by E Nesbit, author of Five Children And It.

SWALLOWS & AMAZONS was the first novel in Arthur Ransome’s much-loved series following the adventures of four children and their sailing boat Swallow. In this film of the first installment, Roger, Titty, Susan and John are taken on holiday by their mother to the Norfolk Broads, where they are allowed to sail their boat to a nearby island and set up camp. However they soon discover another boat: the Amazon, manned by potential rivals for dominion of the island. Evoking an England and way of life long forgotten, SWALLOWS & AMAZONS turns an enduring model of idyllic and innocent childhood into a lyrical and beautifully realized film.

Perfection? 5 Jun 2009
By Filmbuff TOP 1000 REVIEWER

I genuinely do not think it is possible, to find a better film (in its genre) than "The Railway Children". The cast is outstanding. The story charming and everything just perfect! There is so much one can say about this classic film, but it has to be seen to be properly enjoyed.

Swallows and Amazons, too, is a good film, with a charming story. There is no action; there are no special effects and there is no love story! It is about innocence and fun.

Both of these films are timeless and an absolute must for the collector.

I bought this dvd for my 9 year old grand daughter, as I had recently read the Railway Children with her, and was very pleased to find it was the one I remembered from my past, with Jenny Agutter as Bobby. We both loved it, and each had tears in our eyes at the end! We are going to watch the other film next week. I am glad that these timeless children's classics are still available for anothe generation of children largely raised on WIIs and American TV programmes. carol ross

Memories 16 April 2010
Format:DVD
These are charming films about people, especially children, living in decent uncomplicated times. Maybe modern children or even grown ups older than fifty wouldn't identify with the characters in these movies, but for me they bring back many fond memories. The stories are part of my childhood and back then often repeated in books and on the radio.
But despite the glitz of television, cell phones, violent action films, the internet and computer games, people are basically unchanged. And I think that most would enjoy these gems. They are technically adequate, and well acted. Beautiful English enunciated correctly, no vulgarity just simple, lovely story telling.
