This compendium contains a variety of riches from seven different sources, including extracts from the original sleeve notes, as follows:

A. The 4 tracks recorded in New York 1952 with part of the MJQ for the LP "Singing and Swinging", on which she split vocal honours with Dorothy Dunn and Shelby Davis.
B. Three singles recorded in New York in late 1952 with a jazz quartet.
C. The album "Annie by Candlelight" plus the EP "Nocturne for Vocalist", both recorded in London in 1956 with the Tony Crombie Quartet
D. The 10 numbers from the LP "A Song with Mulligan" which was recorded in New York in December 1957 (NOTE: an earlier CD reissue ran to 16 numbers)
E. The album "A Gasser" recorded in Los Angeles in early 1959 with a jazz quintet.
F. The album "Gypsy" recorded in Los Angeles in 1959 with Buddy Bregman.

The running order on the two CDs is A, C, F, B (1)/ E, D, B (2).

Annie is in fine fettle throughout, interpreting the lyrics in her highly individual manner, but always respecting the songwriter's intention. Her rendition of "Skylark" is a thing of beauty, and "I've Told Every Little Star", recorded at the same session, is a delightful exercise in vocal delivery. Buddy Bregman the arranger on the "Gypsy" album, was the nephew of Jule Styne, the score's composer. I doubt this was a big seller when it first came out, but it's certainly stood the test of time.

Good as the first CD is, it's merely the curtain-raiser for Annie's recordings with two of the heavyweights of the then contemporary jazz scene. Despite the prominence of Zoot Sims' name on the original LP sleeve of "It's A Gasser", he was replaced on three numbers by Bill Perkins, and the backing quintet was led by pianist Russ Freeman, who also produced the arrangements.

Format: Audio CD
Annie Ross came from a show-business background (including singing aunt Ella Logan and Jimmy Logan - all-round entertainer) and not content treading the well-worn path favoured by most Fifties British girl singers in seeking Chart hits, she honed her vocal talent to a jazz-edged individuality in France, Monte Carlo and the USA.

This two-disc extensive collection of selections from four (actually I counted five!) albums, one EP and three essential singles (including TWISTED) provides all you need to know about early Annie. THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT (1952 album - SINGIN' AND SWINGIN'), I LOVE PARIS (1956 album - ANNIE BY CANDLELIGHT), I'VE TOLD EVERY LITTLE STAR (1956 EP - NOCTURNE FOR VOCALIST), SMALL WORLD (1959 album - GYPSY), YOU TOOK ADVANTAGE OF ME (1959 album - A GASSER) and ALL OF YOU (1957 album - SINGS A SONG WITH MULLIGAN) are merely samples to savour from the forty-eight songs contained on this set and I can recommend them all.

Avid Records always provides the excellent digitally remastered music with reproductions of the original album liner notes and graphics to tell the tale rather than rely on any updated critique and looking at what's freely given, there's Buddy Bregman on hand as arranger for the Jule Styne/ Stephen Sondheim GYPSY numbers which no doubt helped Annie's jazz-tinged interpretations to expand their popularity at the time. With Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Art Blakey, Tony Crombie, Blossom Dearie and Mel Lewis listed as accompanying Annie at the various recording sessions, its easy to realise the singer was held in high regard with her eclectic classy approach to songs clearly in abundance.

Now over eighty year of age, Annie continues to perform despite now huskily revealing a gravel-pitched vocal delivery but let's celebrate such longevity by enjoying these early sessions.
