Format: Audio CD
A great saxophonist who was at the forefront of extending jazz music into a more receptive audience. This in no way denigrates his integrity but is a compliment to his enormous musicianship. AVID have again produced original albums. This is much appreciated in view of the many, sometimes confusing, post-copyright issues, although respectable compilations are well-represented and documented with dates, personnel etc.
The 'Cannonball' as we know derived not from his ballistic approach but from his high school voracious appetite (Cannibal).
SOMETHIN' ELSE: This is sheer brilliance. The personnel of Hank Jones (piano), Sam Jones (bass), Art Blakey (drums) and one Miles Davis combine to produce a magnificently laid-back album with plenty of scope for the artists. Noted as a favour for Adderley's contribution to 'Kind Of Blue' and 'Milestones' this has the same feel but is very much Cannonball's record. Beautiful renditions of 'Autumn Leaves', 'Love For Sale', and concise choruses on 'Dancing In The Dark' leave no doubt as to Cannonball's status. There is not a dud amongst these numbers. Absolutely essential and Adderley's record.
CANNONBALL'S SHARPSHOOTERS: There retains a freshness to Cannonball's playing in this marvellous largely bebop collection giving 'Parkerish' nods on 'What's New' and the breakneck charged 'One Delight'. The artist gells with his accompanists in a warm and articulate fashion. Monk's 'Straight No Chaser' adds to the versatility of the leader.
THEM DIRTY BLUES: Fabulous quintet recordings. Brother Nat on cornet with the addition of Bobby Timmons (piano),Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums) produced a fiery album. Mainly blues-derived, as the title suggests, it gives Cannonball the space to let-rip.

There is some really fantastic music here for only a few quid, but beware: as with many 50+ year old recordings that are now public domain, anyone can knock out a cheap CD with scant regard to sound quality or editorial standards.

Somethin' Else sounds like it's had extra reverb added, and is quite boomy and tizzy. Sharpshooters is bass-light but also tizzy - the top end boosted for 'modern ears'. Them Dirty Blues has been ripped off an old LP and sounds pretty nasty - hum, crackle, distortion all over the place, not to mention a really honky, mid-heavy sound.

If you really want to hear these albums, do yourself a favour and get the proper individual CDs (which were mastered from the original tapes and have great bonus tracks as well), not this low-budget hotchpotch.

Excellent value for money. Adderley is in my opinion a little underrated and though this does not show his talent as much as his work on "A kind of blue" for example it's never less than powerful and swinging
