CD Description

AVID Roots here presents two classic Champion Jack Dupree albums plus, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Blues From The Gutter' and 'Champion Jack's Natural & Soulful Blues' from 1958 and 1959 respectively are complimented by a host of Singles from the 1940's and 50's, many of which are finding their way onto CD for the very first time courtesy of AVID! We kick things off with Jack's first two albums, 'Blues From The Gutter' recorded in New York in 1958 and considered by many to be his finest work to that point and perhaps his finest work ever! We follow this with an album dear to British blues enthusiasts hearts and recorded in 1959 in London using such stalwart British bluesmen as Alexis Korner and Jack Fallon……'Champion Jack's Natural & Soulful Blues'. Concluding side one and onto side two we have a selection of Jack's singles recorded in the 40's and 50's for such diverse labels as Continental, Red Robin, King and Groove & Vik. Unlike many bluesmen born around the early 1900's Champion Jack Dupree went on to have a very long and full life, travelling extensively around Europe and recording for many different labels as witnessed on this fine double CD. He finally settled in Germany where he died in 1992 having recorded over 40 albums!

Blues Classics 1 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
This 2-CD set combines two ancient Champion Jack LPs with over 30 1940s and 1950s Rhythm & Blues 45 sides by the master, and all for a give-away price. Add to this faithful reproductions of the original LP sleeve art and you can't go wrong. The various singles represented here are never less than listenable, and include some bona fide classics including the riotous 'Shake Baby Shake'. The "second" LP included is 1959's 'Natural & Soulful Blues', recorded in London with Jack Fallon, who was an excellent contrabass player, and Alexis Korner, who was a pretty ordinary guitarist, despite his luminous career as an outstanding broadcaster and committed evangelist for the blues.

The primary, and irresistible, reason for investing a few pounds in this pair of CDs is the reissue of 'Blues From The Gutter', recorded by Dupree for Atlantic in NYC in early 1958, and probably the finest LP he ever put down. Powerful subject-matter in the lyrical flow, clattering rhythmic piano work and Jack's totally personal vocalising combine with a decent jazz-infused rhythm section and the simple but earthy guitar lines of Larry Dale (under his given name of Ennis Lowery) to create an unforgettable and unmissable blues masterpiece. It's cheap, but it's priceless. Wholly recommended.

Terrific profile 21 Dec 2010

Budget label AVID ventures into the world of Blues with their 'roots' series'. Big Bill Broonzy and Champion Jack Dupree!
I have added this CD to my collection and if you like piano blues that rocks and has humour then this will fit the bill.
A few tracks he seemed to record a number of times and turning up in other recordings I have by him. Some are different takes as well and this CD demonstrates that on a number of songs reproduced here.
We have two albums the Supreme 'Blues from the Gutter' and' 'Natural and Soulful Blues' and to round off the double CD set we have a platoon of singles released in the Forties and Fifties.
I think any serious student of the Blues should have some of this New Orleans born artist in their collection.
William Thomas Dupree born in 1910 and died in 1992 learned piano at an early age and in the 1920's worked those barrelhouses and juke joints as a soloist, he also played in jazz bands.
Dupree's life was colourful and varied he worked as a prizefighter taking occasional music jobs in the 1930's and it was there he was 'discovered' and signed to OKeh records in 1940.
The 2nd World War took him into the Navy and when he left the service he located in New York recording for several small labels and this album gives a fair smattering of these tracks.
Champion Jack played with a strong two- fisted stykle and he was well known for his humour gboth in the lyrics of his songs and in his delivery, but it doesn't detract, the man swings like crazy!
From 1960 onwards he resettled in Europe living and performing and even marrying a British girl. Dupree was seen in many a blues venue both here and in mainland Europe were he eventually settled in Switzerland. This CD is a lovely reminder of what a great performer he was and it is at a very attractive price and the sleeve notes are lovingly replicated from the original vinyl sleeves. A must.

Make no mistake the music within this collection is amongst the finest post war blues and contains one of the very very best blues LP ever, but...
The overall sound quality is great, but "Blues from the Gutter" (one of the very very best blues LP ever)is marred by an overwhelming hiss, the hiss is not elsewhere on this CD, so why is it on "Blues from the Gutter". Blues from the Gutter was reissued on Vinyl in the late 80s in superb sound, and on Cd in 1993, so why all the hiss?
Ignore the hiss enjoy this mix of 2 superb LPs for Atlantic, recorded for a more refined audience and a host of singles recorded for the Jukebox and Ghetto markets.
