Product Description

CD Description

AVID Jazz here presents four classic Humphrey Lyttleton 10''; albums plus, including original liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Jazz Concert', 'Jazz Session with Humph', 'Humph In Perspective', 'Here s Humph!' and the plus, tracks from 'Humph Swings Out'. Our selections feature the great man across a diverse grouping of albums ranging from the transitional phase of 'Here s Humph!', where we are treated to tracks from his old band, his revolutionary band featuring tenor sax and his current band of the moment! We then look back with Humph on 'Humph In Perspective' where he reviews his musical achievements from his position as the pre eminent UK jazz man of the era and best known band leader in Europe. On 'Jazz Session with Humph' we hear all but one track recorded before an invited and delighted audience. Rounded out with tracks from 'Humph Swings Out' we present a well rounded representation of one of the greatest British jazz musicians ever, Humphrey Lyttleton.

long gone LPs which are re-relesed in CD form at a bargain price.Deliverd next day of ordering. I had forgotten how good Humphs 'mainstream' band with Tony Coe Joe Temperley etc was. Highly recomended .

These four albums were originally issued as 10" LPs, and span the fifties. Listening to them again, I was struck by the degree of cohesion achieved by the various groups, by the surefooted choice of tempo for each number, and by Humph's commanding lead. He also swam against the trad tide by dispensing with vocals, thus ensuring that the music flowed uninterrupted from start to finish. The result is vibrant and thrilling, and as fresh today as when it was first recorded. A superb compilation, including original liner notes, personnel, and recording dates, it is great value for money.

These are heady days for Humphrey Lyttelton fans. Bookshelves groan with his collected works and archive CDs continue to emerge. 'Four Classic Albums Plus' (Avid), a generously-priced twofer, is only the latest of many. Via its 39 tracks (steps?) we move from Humph's mid-1950s any-tempo-as-long-as-you-can-jive-to-it trad jazz to his more relaxed octet mainstream. Look out for Bruce Turner's airy alto and Tony Coe's clarinet aiding and abetting the boss's sure-footed trumpet lead. Invaluable. (Peter Vacher, JazzUK)
