Format: Audio CD
A skilful interpreter of standards, Teddi King (1929-1977) honed her vocal craft in small clubs etc. during the Fifties and even though she embraced both the jazz and pop worlds, the singer failed to gain the wider recognition she really deserved. Therefore, her recording career proved to be somewhat sparse.

Avid's series of jazz-related material from the past now includes four of Teddi's albums on this excellent two-disc set from the period 1953-1957; the first being Coral's ALL THE KING'S SONGS (1953) which is a collection dedicated to Teddi's favourite male singers via their songs and Dick Haymes (THAT'S FOR ME) Billy Eckstine (COTTAGE FOR SALE) and, of course, Sinatra (THIS LOVE OF MINE) are amongst her dozen choices with orchestral direction shared by Lew Douglas and Johnny Richards.

Three RCA albums BIDIN' MY TIME (1955), TO YOU FROM TEDDI KING (1956) and A GIRL AND HER SONGS (1957) form the collection's mainstay with orchestral accompaniment provided by Al Cohn and George Siravo. Teddi's repertoire ranges from the familiar THAT OLD FEELING, INDIAN SUMMER and THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT to more esoteric selections like WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? AFTER ALL IT'S SPRING and CHICKEN TODAY AND FEATHERS TOMORROW. As a bonus, there are six songs extracted from the 10 inch eight-track Storyville album MISS TEDDI KING (1954) on which the singer had minimal accompaniment via Jimmy Jones (piano), Jo Jones (drums), Milt Hinton (bass) and Ruby Braff (trumpet) for intimate renderings of LOVE IS HERE TO STAY and IT'S THE TALK OF THE TOWN.

Teddi's clear expressive vocal style needed no vocal gymnastics to succeed with her relaxed intimacy and sincerity utilised to stunning effect throughout; whether with full orchestral accompaniment or small group setting.

Format: Audio CD
This compilation comprises four and three-quarter albums. The earliest was "All The King's Songs", recorded for Coral during 1953 with an orchestra directed by Lew Douglas & Johnny Richards. The next was originally entitled "Storyville Presents Miss Teddi King", a 10" LP recorded in 1954 with the quartet of Ruby Braff, Jimmy Jones, Milt Hinton and Jo Jones. Six of the eight numbers are presented here, split three aside between the two CDs. The remainder is made up of three RCA albums, namely "Bidin' My Time" with Al Cohn & his Orchestra from mid-1955, "To You from Teddi King" from mid 1956, and "A Girl and Her Songs" from March 1957, both accompanied by George Siravo & his Orchestra.

Teddi King had a glorious bell-like voice, with a controlled vibrato, which poured forth apparently effortlessly. Like all the best vocalists, she had the ability to project the lyrics in an understated fashion, relying on dynamics and intonation to convey her interpretation. The result was a delivery both subtle and pleasing to the ear, which can be enjoyed without any sense of listener fatigue. Given those attributes, the sadness is that she developed the auto-immune disease Lupus in the early sixties, and did not record again until 1977, the year of her death. As a result, she is far less well-remembered than other female vocalists of the era with whom she deserves to be ranked.

Miss King sounds equally at home with a small jazz combo, a big band, and a full orchestra. The set is packaged with the original liner notes, and both CDs have a playing time of just one second short of 80 minutes. It's an exquisite reissue, which will commend itself to Miss King's devotees, and should help to swell their number.

Format: Audio CD
Teddi King is a singer you may not be that familiar with but I first came into contact with her when she recorded for audiophile in the 1970s these 4 albums pre date that and are a real delight. This 2 CD set has 3 of her RCA LPs Bidin' My Time & To You both dating from 1956 plus A Girl and her Songs from 1957. The 4th album is her Coral LP dating from 1959 entitled All the Kings Songs. Included also are songs from the rare ten inch LP Miss Teddi King dating from 1956-1958. To have so much from such a talented but not that well known singer is brilliant. She had a warm voice that delivered both ballad and more uptempo songs with ease. Excellent sound transfers and inserts make this a must. More please Avid...
