Product Description

Product Description

AVID Jazz here presents three classic Tal Farlow albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Autumn In New York', 'The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow', 'This Is Tal Farlow' and 'Tal Farlow Plays The Music Of Harold Arlen'. From 1954 'Autumn In New York' features Tal on guitar with Gerry Wiggins on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Chico Hamilton on drums. Largely self- taught, Tal Farlow came up through the ranks with a reputation for speed! Inspired by the playing of Charlie Christian in the Goodman band, Farlow would go on to combine this unique speed with technique and become one of the great jazz guitar players of the era. On this set, apart from 'Cherokee' taken at break neck speed, the rest is of a more restrained nature! 'The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow' from 1956 features the trio of Farlow, up and coming pianist Eddie Costa on piano and the as yet unknown Vinnie Burke on bass. The trio played to unanimous praise in New York as attested to by critic Nat Hentoff in the original liner notes …………'one of the most gratifying trios to play New York in the past three years…………..continually inventive interplay……………….Farlow, ideas wise is like a swinging waterfall with a rare reserve resourcefulness of fresh conception'……………Nice! 1958's 'This Is Tal Farlow' features Eddie Costa again on piano with Nabil Totah on bass and Jimmy Campbell on drums. The quartet forms a fine cohesive unit with Farlow and Costa making a solid and complimentary first line with Totah and Campbell ably supporting back up! For our final selection Tal journeys across the three phases of composer Harold Arlen's illustrious career for 'Tal Farlow Plays The Music Of Harold Arlen'. Firstly, Arlen as the night club composer writing revues for the Cotton Club, secondly as the great Broadway writer and thirdly and perhaps inevitably, as the Hollywood film composer. Joining Tal as the principal soloist is Frank Weiss on tenor sax! All three albums plus have been digitally re-mastered.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE TALENT OF TAL 9 May 2013
By Barry McCanna TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Guitarist Tal Farlow had two advantages, one natural, the other acquired. He had large hands and long fingers, and developed the ability to play at speed as a member of the Red Norvo Trio, where it was a sine qua non. He formed his own group in 1954, and these four Verve albums all date from the late fifties. "Autumn in New York" was recorded in November 1954, with Gerry Wiggins on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Chico Hamilton on drums. Overall it's a fairly relaxed affair, but for Ray Noble's "Cherokee" which is played at breakneck speed. "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow" was recorded in March and June 1956, with Eddie Costa on piano and Vinnie Burke on bass, generally regarded as one of his finest groups. Burke provides a walking bass throughout, with Farlow and Costa alternating between playing in unison and trading phrases. "This is Tal Farlow" dates from February 1958, with Costa on piano, Nabil Totah on bass and Jimmy Campbell on drums. The Harold Arlen album was recorded in December 1959, with a group comprising Frank Wess on tenor sax & flute, Dick Hyman on piano, and Osie Johnson on drums, with Wendell Marshall and Joe Benjamin sharing bass, and Bennie Powell added on trombone for four numbers. Because Tal Farlow went into semi-retirement for a long period he's less well-known today than he deserves to be. I hope that this reissue of four of his best albums will help win a new legion of admirers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Were the good old days really so good? 27 Dec 2013
By KnightinTunisia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
back in the day, we had to drive a good half an hour to a record dealer's house to buy japanese import reissues of Tal's great verve stuff with inferior sound quality for $10 each… and that was in the '70s.

Then I put ads in Goldmine seeking Tal records.

They were that hard to find.

To see a reissue package like this at a budget price is quite amazing. The last album, Plays the Music of Harold Arlen is dispensable. The other albums are great with the small group setting Tal liked the most.

Swinging Guitar is "drummer less" and Tal often employed that setup. Autumn In New York, aka "Guitar Artistry" has Chico Hamilton on drums; it's impossible to tap your foot in time to Cherokee. The Tal Farlow Album has a rather well known version of Stella By Starlight, where Tal just pours out line after line, note after note with sparks flying at an incendiary tempo.

So when you're enjoying this for $10-$20 bucks, think of how much effort it took guys like me to get this great guitar jazz!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat the price 4 Feb 2014

I have been collecting The work of this BeBop giant for 45 years and have never even seen or heard of one of the four lp transfers in this set; so for me it was a truly an important reissue. I have to say I was worried it would be a off day for the guitar hero but nothing could be farther from the truth. He was very on that day and his band swings to high heaven. All the music on this is first rate!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very complex stuff played with such speed and abandon-it easy to lose the casual listener 27 Jun 2014
By SRJ - Published on Amazon.com

Tal epitomizes Bebop in its heyday. Very complex stuff played with such speed and abandon-it easy to lose the casual listener. Tal played for players, not for the public. The musicianship is obviously first rate, but a listener has to work his way up to Tal. He was simply too far ahead of his time.
