The music is very good , looking back I would rather have bought the individual albums, but they are a cheaper introduction if you're not familiar with his music.

Essental for Mitchell fans - his first 7 albums as a leader 8 Aug. 2013
By Mike Tarrani - Published on Amazon.com
This set is a complete chronology of Mitchell's recorded output from his inaugural album in 1958 as a leader through 1962. All of the albums were recorded for Riverside and there are no gaps in the output which is his first seven albums as a leader.

The sound is excellent. I own a number of sets from this label and have been thoroughly pleased with each one. Audiophiles may complain, but for most of us this is an inexpensive way to obtain a decent body of Mitchell's early recordings at an affordable price.

At the time of this review there is no track listing, nor are there sound samples on this page. I have linked to each of the albums in this set and have also provided discography information - something that this label is short on. On the linked album product pages are sound samples and some good reviews of each of the albums. It will also give you an opportunity to compare the cost of buying these albums individually versus this value-priced set. Here is what the set includes:
=========
DISC ONE
=========
The first seven tracks on this disc comprise the album titled Big 6. This is Mitchell's inaugural album as a leader. The tracks were recorded in NYC for Riverside during two sessions on July 2 and 3, 1958. Mitchell is accompanied by Curtis Fuller on trombone and Johnny Griffin on tenor sax. The rhythm section is Wynton Kelly on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Tracks are:
1. Blues March
2. Big Six
3. There Will Never Be Another You
4. Brother Ball
5. Jamph
6. Sir John
7. Promenade

The remaining tracks on this disc and the first track on disc two comprise the album titled Out of the Blue. The tracks in this set reflect how the album was originally released by Riverside in 1959. Reissues have a bonus track titled Studio B that was recorded in the January 5, 1959 session, but not on the
original. It is also missing from this set. The musicians are Mitchell on trumpet and Benny Golson on tenor sax backed by a rhythm section comprised of Wynton Kelly on piano, bassists Sam Jones on tracks 8, 10 and 11 and Paul Chambers on the remaining ones, and Art Blakey on drums. Tracks are:
8. Blues On My Mind
9. It Could Happen To You
10. Boomerang
11. Sweet Cakes
12. Missing You
=========
DISC TWO
=========
The first track is a continuation of Out of the Blue from disc one.
1. When The Saints Go Marching In

Tracks 2 through 10 are the album titled Blue Soul as originally released by Riverside in 1959. Bonus tracks on reissues are not included here. The sessions producing this album were in NYC on September 24, 28 and 30, 1959. Mitchell is accompanied by Curtis Fuller on trombone and Jimmy Heath on tenor sax except tracks 4, 5 and 8 on which Mitchell is only backed by the rhythm section that is comprised of Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Tracks:
2. Minor Soul
3. The Head
4. The Way You Look Tonight
5. Park Avenue Petite
6. Top Shelf
7. Waverley Street
8. Blue Soul
9. Polka Dots And Moonbeams
10. Nica's Dream

The remaining tracks on this disc and the first three on disc three are the album titled Blue's Moods. This album was recorded for Riverside in two sessions spanning August 24 and 25, 1960 and released the same year. The format is as a quartet with Mitchell backed by Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Roy Brooks on drums. Tracks are:
11. I'll Close My Eyes
12. Avars
13. Scrapple From The Apple
14. Kinda Vague
15. Sir John
=========
DISC THREE
=========
The first three tracks on this disc are a continuation of the album titled Blue's Moods from disc two:
1. When I Fall In Love
2. Sweet Pumpkin
3. I Wish I Knew

The remaining tracks on this disc is the album titled Smooth As The Wind that was recorded for Riverside over the course of three sessions on December 27, 1960 and March 29 and 30, 1961. The December 27 session produced tracks 7 through 9 and 11. The musicians were a string section backing a big band. The trumpet section is comprised of Mitchell, Clark Terry, Burt Collins and Bernie Glow. Willie Ruff is on French Horn, and Julian Priester and Britt Woodman on trombone. The rhythm section is Tommy Flanagan on piano, Tommy Williams on bass and Charlie Persip on drums. The remaining tracks were recorded during the March sessions with a string section backing a big band. The trumpet section and French horn are the same as the earlier session, with a new trombone section comprised of Jimmy Cleveland and Urbie Green. The rhythm section is the same except Philly Joe Jones is on drums. Tracks are:
4. Smooth As The Wind
5. But Beautiful
6. The Best Things In Life Are Free
7. Peace
8. For Heaven's Sake
9. The Nearness Of You
10. A Blue Time
11. Strollin'
12. For All We Know
13. I'm A Fool To Want You
=========
DISC FOUR
=========
The first seven tracks on this disc is the album titled A Sure Thing, which was recorded in NYC for Riverside on March 7, 8 and 28, 1962, and released the same year. Tracks 2 through 5 were recorded on the March 7 and 8 sessions with Mitchell on trumpet, Clark Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn, Julius Watkins on French horn, Jerome Richardson on alto sax and flute, and Jimmy Heath on tenor sax. The rhythm section is Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Albert Heath on drums. The remaining tracks feature Mitchell on trumpet, Jimmy Heath on tenor sax and the same rhythm section. On tracks 1 and 6 the ensemble is joined by Clark Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn, Julius Watkins on French horn, Jerome Richardson on alto sax and flute. Pepper Adams is on baritone sax on track 1 and Pat Patrick on track 2.
1. West Coast Blues
2. I Can't Get Started
3. Blue On Blue
4. A Sure Thing
5. Hootie Blues
6. Hip To It
7. Gone With The Wind

The remaining tracks on this disc (and in this set) is the album titled The Cup Bearers. It was recorded in NYC in 1962. Actual date(s) from sources I have checked do not agree. One of the premier jazz discographies claims April 11, 1962, while another claims two sessions spanning August 28 and 30 of that year. All sources agree that the personnel is Mitchell is accompanied by Junior Cook on tenor sax and backed by Cedar Walton on piano, Gene Taylor on bass and Roy Brooks on drums. Tracks are:
8. Turquoise
9. Why Do I Love You
10. Dingbat Blues
11. Capers
12. The Cup Bearers
13. How Deep Is The Ocean
14. Tiger Lily

Overall this is a great way to kickstart a Blue Mitchell collection. I have been snapping these inexpensive Classic Album sets up and this one is a true gem among them. In fact, it's the only one that is in true chronological order without skipping an album.

One fine package by an unjustly neglected trumpeter 3 April 2014
By Jeffrey Tedford - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
Blue Mitchell travelled in fast company, like his boss Horace Silver, trombonist Curtis Fuller of the Jazz Messengers, tenorman Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, arranger Jimmy Heath and many more. Mitchell's bright singing tone was instantly recognizable as was his harmonic ingenuity in varied settings. These seven albums are unjustly neglected gems of the era (1958-1962) and belong in every fan of hard-bop trumpet's library, side by side with Booker Little, Donald Byrd, and Freddie Hubbard.
