This compilation features five albums in random order, chronologically speaking. "Urbie Green Septet" dates from December 1953 and "Urbie Green & his Band" was recorded in August 1954, and offered four extended numbers. To judge from their playing time, both were 10" LPs. "East Coast Jazz" dates from January 1955, "Blues and Other Shades of Green" followed in October 1955, and finally "All about Urbie Green & his Big Band" dates from mid-1956.
Urbie Green brought a wealth of experience to these sessions, having worked with Gene Krupa in the late 40s, then with Woody Herman's Third Herd. He was a much respected trombonist with a beautiful full tone which commanded attention, and this compilation presents him in both big band and small group settings, playing a wide range of compositions. His various studio groups included Ruby Braff, Doc Severinson, Al Cohn, Lou McGarity, Oscar Pettiford, Dave McKenna, Freddie Green, Jimmy Raney, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke. Another winner from Avid.
