Review

On the day Class Three went to sea, "they saw some sea lions skipping stones, but they didn't see the skull and crossbones." Sure enough, pirates with names like Pirate Booger Nose board the ship and take the ship captive to try and find treasure. But when a friendly octopus helps out, pirates don't have a chance. This book will appeal to kids on many levels. It is about pirates, which are always popular. The illustrations fill the page and are bold and fun to see, and the pirates are almost more comical in appearance than scary. The words dance across the page, using font and style to show what they mean--very fast, not very fast. It rhymes throughout, giving it a rhythm that makes it perfect for reading out loud. Children's librarians should take note, as this would be an excellent storytime book and a solid addition to any library collection.

On CLASS TWO AT THE ZOO:

As a class of wide-eyed day-trippers make their way round the zoo, they fail to notice the slimy snake slithering ominously in the background. Suddenly he pounces, and devours one unsuspecting child after another.  With animated illustrations, especially the snake's bulging belly as his 'dinner' wriggles inside him, there's a rising sense of suspense before the snake relinquishes his captives and slinks off to slighter another day...

(Junior )

A visit to the zoo turns suddenly perilous for a rambunctious class in this bouncy cautionary tale... Just the ticket for reading prior to a class trip.

(Kirkus Reviews )

The anaconda in this meaty tale could possibly do with a makeover in the predictable behaviour department. Not that I'd change the story one jot. There is something immensely satisfying about a snake full of children.

(The Bookseller Crow )

Overall this is a funny, quirky story w hich is likely to appeal to many small children.

(The Bookbag )

5.0 out of 5 stars KIDS SCUPPER PIRATES 20 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
Perfect for Class 3 kids - I have one - this hilarious book appeals to all the family. It's a romp with all the ingredients that appeal to kids, rude names, but not too rude, loads of action and disgusting villains. Lynne Chapman's pics make the pirates funny rather than scary and add to the comic adventure of kids being captured by pirates but getting their own back and escaping with the help of a friendly octopus. As I read this favourite often I'm pleased to find a kids' book that is fun to read aloud. It rhymes throughout and has a really lively rhythm. Great book! Come on, Julia, where's Class 4?

The 3 year old I look after loves this book, great pictures we always find new things going on in each page. Great to read, flows well. Just purchased for my nephew too. Class two at the zoo is well worth a look at too.

Great for any class teacher of class 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pirates V Kids and Octopus 4 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
The cover of this great picture book isn't as striking as the earlier CLASS TWO AT THE ZOO, but like the pictures inside, it rewards a careful perusal. The detail is terrific and often hilarious but like an earlier reviewer I was pleased to see that Harry, one of the kids has a disability - that doesn't stop him being a key player. The story is classic - kids defeat pirates with the help of a friendly octopus. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Picture 10 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
A funny rhyming story about Class Three's school boat trip that gets attacked by pirates! One child wears leg braces.

This book is in a list of early years picture books that feature disabled characters. The list was produced by UK disability charity Scope's In the Picture campaign, which encourages publishers, illustrators and writers to include disabled children in their books

3.0 out of 5 stars Huge hit with my class! 3 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Class Two at the Zoo was big with my Year 2 class. Of course! But to my surprise Class Three All At Sea is proving even more popular. It's the pirates who are responsible, especially Pirate Bogey Nose but Fish Breath Frank is a close contender. The not too rude names caused much hilarity. When four dastardly pirates and one sweet but dopey one capture Class Three's pleasure boat their teacher isn't much help. Fortunately there's a helpful octopus and the pupils are a resourceful lot, so though it has its scary moments -'See that island straight ahead? Well sail straight to it or Class Three's DEAD!'- a happy ending is never in doubt. The rhyming text trips off the tongue aided by some inventive alliteration. Lynne Chapman's witty illustrations repay close study as the detail adds characterisation and even more humour. Where - we're all asking - is Class Four and did we miss Class One?
