Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Warp's reputation for bringing truly new sounds to the British dance floor is unparalleled, but Claro--the debut British release from young Finnish mathematician Lassi Nikko--raises eyebrows in a very different, but no less thrilling way. Working with inspirations that can be traced back into the earliest reaches of the Warp back catalogue, Nikko's talent is clearly in his skilful, flamboyant regurgitation of every sequencer trick under the sun: morphing techno mutant "Brothomstate Ipxen", for one, is plainly comprised of reconfigured slivers of everyone from Aphex Twin to LFO to Autechre. Meanwhile, the excellent "In" unleashes a flurry of shrill, see-sawing acid sounds over a slow, elephantine boom of distorted sub-bass, while the moment in "Kava" where the mutant deck scratchdown kicks in over the ethereal, spy-film synth is well-judged enough for any techno trainspotter to forgive Nikko for his light-fingered antics. With Britain's simmering electronic underground already well and truly tapped by a glut of knowledgeable labels such as Warp, Rephlex and Planet Mu, it's going to be the likes of Brothomstates--an international wave of imitator-innovators--that are destined to take avant-garde dance music to the next level. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of sisu but kiva at the same time, 3 Jan 2002
This review is from: Claro (Audio CD)
This album is just amazing. Right from the other-worldy synth stabs of 'In' to the lovely ambience and great beats of the closer 'Viimo'. It encompasses Autechre-esque beat manipulation, Boards of Canada melodies and Aphex-style weirdness but has Lassi Nikko's own personal touch of unique genius imprinted on each track. Other tracks worth noting are 'Brothomstates Ipxen', 'Kava' and 'Mdrmx'. Spellbinding stuff - I just can't get enough of it! Pure Finnish genius.

4.0 out of 5 stars A grower, 22 Oct 2005

There's is nothing in Claro that really stands up and slaps you in the face. It's a carefully laid out arrangement of effective melodies presented in delicately constructed sythesised sound with the occasional off-kilter percussion, and at first you might think it just another example of poor-man's Autechre. However, I found my affection for it grew substantially and I learnt to appreciate the space in the recording. I'd say Brothomstates are good at thinking "that's enough, let's not fiddle with that any more" leaving us with something fascinatingly uncomplicated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning aural landscapes, 1 Oct 2001

This review is from: Claro (Audio CD)
You have to appreciate the audacity and supreme confidence of the beginning of Claro. The first track "In" is a slowl, haunting electro string piece which sets the darkish and melancholy tone of Claro perfectly. After the opening the album doesnt let down fans of Brothomstates or Warp.

The albums beautiful and creative melodies can be enojyed even if the genre isnt to your liking.

"KivesQ" is another banging track which could actually turn into a hit if it's released as a single.

Consistency is the key word of this album. Tracks differ in their style ( all share the same melancholy ) but none of them are weak, there's something for everyone here.
