Review

'This bracing and illuminating work draws out the charm of Gable's private character as well as doing justice to his remarkable struggle to reach the top and stay there.' Christopher Sylvester, Mail on Sunday --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Clark Gable arrived in Hollywood after a rough-and-tumble youth, and his breezy, big-boned, everyman persona quickly made him the town’s king. He was a gambler among gamblers, a heavy drinker in the days when everyone drank seemingly all the time, and a lover to legions of the most attractive women in the most glamorous business in the world, including the great love of his life, Carole Lombard.

In this well-researched and revealing biography, Warren G. Harris gives an exceptionally acute portrait of one of the most memorable actors in the history of motion pictures—whose intimates included such legends as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, David O. Selznick, Jean Harlow, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy, and Grace Kelly—as well as a vivid sense of the glamour and excess of mid-century Hollywood.

This book was absolutley engrossing! Very well written and factual, but reads like good book. His struggle to reach the top from a very poor background is an example of perserverance. As an avid reader of biographies I found this book to be a very enjoyable read.

Excellent biography of the all time King of Hollywood. Informative, interesting and extremely readable. Gable is probably one of, if not the best known star of the golden age of film, but I knew little about his private life until I'd read Warren Harris' first rate book.

This is by far the best biography i have ever read. It takes you back in time and is so beautifully written. The writer is not sensationalist at all, but leaves you, the reader to wonder how you would have reacted in these "unreal" circumstances. I could not put the book down and have now passed it on.
I have ordered further books by this author as he has intrigued me with the whole movie industry that is long gone - but never forgotten.
Thanks Warren for a fabulous read.
