Product Description

Product Description

A BBC drama based on Samuel Richardson's novel. Clarissa Harlowe (Saskia Wickham) is a young, beautiful and virginal heiress whose virtue is well-known. However, the handsome but ruthless Lovelace (Sean Bean) has picked her as his prey and sets out to seduce her (thereby destroying her). But he has not counted on Clarissa's strength of character and also his own weakness; he very soon finds himself falling in love with her which drives him into ever higher forms of decadence and ultimately his own destruction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling Bean 12 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
The authenticity of this series was stunning; the care and attention not only to sets and costume but also mannerisms and language. But most of all anyone who saw the series on TVremembers Sean Bean. He positively sets the TV set on fire as the ultimate cad, Lovelace. A great girls' night in special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarissa 24 May 2003
Format:DVD
I saw this fine picture when it was released on the BBC in 1991 and have just recently purchased the DVD. I had forgotten how fine the acting was by Sean Bean and Sacha Wickman, the two main characters of Clarissa and Richard Lovelace. In fact the whole production and cast were excellent and should be shown again on television just to emphasise the quality of actors and actress we have in Britain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb performance 15 Jun 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Ten years after the first viewing of Clarissa on TV I finally managed to buy this DVD and it still fascinates me. The scenery is magical, the performance of Saskia Wickham and Sean Bean beyond reproach. The whole cast is magnificent. This is a must see for every lover of costume productions. Clarissa's struggle to remain pure and to convert adulterous Lovelace is all inspiring, Lovelace's fight to subdue her on one hand and to stay (unsucessfully) unaffected by his growing feelings for her on the other makes your knees week. Absolutely delicious work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Mr. Lovelace! 19 Sep 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Superb work produced by the BBC. It gives us a hint of how women were treated in those times. But I want to speak mainly of the film, or series, itself. Fine music, clothing, actresses and actors. And Sean Bean is amazing, as usual, and utterly beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star performances all round! 19 Nov 2010
Format:DVD
well, I have been trying for years to get hold of this DVD. I wasn't disappointed! I had already seen the drama twice on television in the 90's and loved it soooo much! Watching it again after all these years it has definately withstood the test of time and could have easily been made recently! The story line is fantastic, with this drama being the making of Sean Bean. He is wonderful as the villain of the story and was perfectly cast. For me ALL the cast are fabulous in their roles. A must see for any period drama fanatic and a must see for all Sean Bean fans. Highly recommended viewing!!

I watched this each time it was shown on the BBC and have been trying to buy it for years! As a massive Sean Bean fan it has an obvious attraction for me, but even without that it is a story that will have you totally absorbed from beginning to end. The cast is a good one and the characters they depict will make you loathe, love, despise and admire as the story takes you through Clarissa's involvement with the dastardly Lovelace. If you like stories that do not always end how they should then this is a film for you to see. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic drama at its best 14 April 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I watched this series when it first aired on the BBC many years ago. I was hooked then by the mesmerising performances and the strength of the script. I was delighted that, on purchasing this DVD, that none of the programmes charm had diminished. This is a tale of passion, love, betrayal and sacrifice. A must for any fan of quality costume drama.
