I have read all 9 novels now, and as someone else has said, i wish it was even longer.
Samuel Richardson was a genius and so so ahead of his time in regards to so many issues that are still very relevent today, including the part women play in society, and forced to play. (if i didnt know better, i would think it was written by a women LOL)
His observations of life, societies and human psychology of both men and women through viewed social interactions are breathtakingly astute, this is one clued up man!
His writings were at first meant as moral guides, yet he obviously was not a cold moralist, because we can see in his text he is capable of and had almost certainly felt certain strong emotions in his life, but was ruled by a stronger moral sense.
On first appearances, one would think it is Clarissa who is the victim of Lovelace's wickedness, but we discover that the real victim is Lovelace, the victim of his own wickedness and Carissa's part in his road to torture and despair, and what a tragic victim he makes!! She is his weakness and his road to self ruin.
When he kidnaps her, he seals his own fate and doom, and because of this downward spiral of wickedness, its without possibility of retribution.
When looking at reviews of clarissa from other sources, I have found reviews of the series, now I have never seen these, but...judging by the reviews and takes people have on it, it sounds like a portrayed rather different from the book, either that or they were not really watching closely, LOL
So don't think watching the film gives you a real full depth to all the true messages of the novels.
