Book Description

2 July 2009 Clarice Bean (Book 3)

An exceptionordinarily good audio CD version of Clarice Bean Spells Trouble. Read by Claire Skinner, star of the hugely popular TV series 'Outnumbered'.

There are so many things in life you can't explain. Like why isn't YOU spelt U? Why isn't WHY spelt Y? And why can just opening your mouth get you into some very BIG trouble?

Clarice Bean is in non-stop trouble these days - almost as much as Karl Wrenbury, and he is the naughtiest boy in school. Clarice just wants to star in the school play and impress Mrs Wilberton in the spelling bee, but things aren't quite going to plan . . .

'Witty and charming. We can't get enough of Clarice Bean.' - Independent

Review

What Bridget Jones is to thirtysomethings, Clarice Bean is to pre-teens: full of funny one-liners, doing her best to overcome her shortcomings, prone to embarrassing mistakes and good at heart ... The story, like Child's doodles, is witty and charming and crams a lot of meaning into apparent simplicity ... We can't get enough of Clarice Bean. (Sunday Times) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, interesting and impressive 20 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have just finished reading this to my daughter and I'm not sure which of us enjoyed it most. It is great fun to read out loud as the voices come off the page very clearly as the characters are extremely well drawn.

I was especially impressed by the authors ability to get inside the head of a primary age child. Clarice Bean is a very real child who is doing her best to figure out the sometimes complicated world she lives in. There are none of the black and white moral certainties that so many children's books are filled with i.e "Lying is always wrong", "Parents are always right".

The book ends with Clarice making a brave decision to do what SHE thinks is the right thing to do even though her parents and teachers would probably have disagreed with her decision.

This book made my six year old ask lots of good questions and more importantly think hard about some rather important things.

The bottom line however is that Clarice Bean is a great read, funny and thought provoking buy it and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly worth It! 18 May 2006
By Laura
Format:Paperback
This is just brilliant you have to read it. I suggest if you like Utterly me Clarice Bean then buy this. I love the way it's written full of humour almost like Clarice's Diary packed with great illustrations. Clarice has heard about the school play the sound of music, she really wants to play the part of Lisel but she dosen't think Mrs Wilberton will let her. Her brother Kurt works in this vegetarian shop now and her best friend Betty Moody is playing the part of Louisa in the school play. There is this spelling bee on the same week as the school play and Clarice dosen't want to go. But she gets into trouble for Better or worse? BRILLIANT great for anyone age 7 and upwards.

Read it !!

My 9 year old granddaughter is an avid reader and at present is 'hooked' on Clarice Bean, she reads these books over and over again. It is so wonderful in this day and age to see a child get so much pleasure from a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clarice Bean Spells Trouble! 21 Mar 2008
By Sophie
Format:Paperback
This book was a page turner! The first page you read you feel you have to carry on! When Mrs Wilberton announces about the school play Clarice Bean is determined to get the part she wants, from this point everything turns out to be trouble for Clarice Bean, and her friends are not getting on better! I definitely recommend this book to any person looking for a great read! Its a book worth getting!

The whole family loves this book. I bought it for my 5 year old daughter who adores it but everyone in the house love to read it to her including her 15 year old brother. We got second copy also for my 8 year old niece recently confident that she will also enjoy it as much as we do.

4.0 out of 5 stars What about karl? 25 Jan 2009
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
It's ok but not brilliant. The reason I don't say it's brilliant is because it does not tell you everything that happened.I was curios about what happened to Karl Wrenbury especially with his father. And the book didn't really tell you why he was not happy. WHY WAS HE SO UPSET? But the rest is really good I recommend that other children should try it. I am a fan. YAY! Romanah, Aged 10.
