Release Date: 10 Feb 2010 | Series: Radio Collection
This is the fifth series of the Sony Award-winning comedy starring Sally Phillips as Clare and Liza Tarbuck as Helen. Splendidly self-obsessed social worker Clare Barker is back in the community and as entertaining as ever in the fifth series of this acclaimed BBC Radio 4 comedy. In these six episodes, Clare finally manages to make friends, has a new trainee social worker to break in and the family centre is the focus of a documentary film. An old university friend visits Clare - and has a confession to make - while at work Clare has to deal with Tibetan Singing Bowls and a team leader seeking brutal and honest feedback. Clare also hosts a garden party to get to know her new neighbours, Ray is determined to sing his folk songs, and Clare and Ben are now parents of an, as yet, unnamed child. Sally Phillips stars as Clare, with Liza Tarbuck as Helen, Alex Lowe as Brian, Richard Lumsden as Ray and Nina Conti as Megan in a further round of team meetings and eleven o'clock cakes. "Beautifully observed performances...an impressive cast and some genuinely funny writing make this a must". ("The Stage").

With Clare series 4 ending on her announcing her preganancy, series 5 commences with Clare already having had her baby (possibly as many preganancy scenes had already been visited with Megan) Thomas. We are also introduced to the East-European nanny Nali (played by Nina Conti who is completely different from her other character Megan) who is smarter than Clare seems to think and there is a bit of friction between them at times. Brian on the other hand enjoys her company and takes a shine to her.
I didn't think the writers could come up with more funny episodes as most of the Guardian strip cartoons had been incorporated into the programmes. I was completely wrong. With the baby, nanny and parenthood the writers have gone out of their way to make something original. We have quite a few quickfire banter with Brian and Simon in the school playground which ends up with Brian shouting something embarrassing. All these episodes are as good as those in other series especially the last programme (The 1864 Mining Disaster).
The episodes are:
1) Name Calling: We are introduced to baby Thomas and the nanny Nali. Clare and her workmates are giving a leaving present to their longest-serving colleague.
2) Too Cool For School: Clare and Megan make a visit to a girl who has been truant from school. Clare also has a new "cool" group of friends to hang with.
3) Girls on Film: Irene's partner Collette wants to make a documentary about social workers. Clare has a new student from a privileged background.
4) It's Good to Talk: An old friend of Clare comes to stay who has something important to tell her. Brian tries to work out the mathematics behind his relationship with Clare.
5) Garden Party: Clare holds a garden party but has some difficult neighbours.
6) The 1864 Mining Disaster: Clare and her colleagues hold a benefit gig to try to save the Sparrowhawk Centre.
Sally Phillips is back as the Ultra PC social worker, if that doesn't sound a barrel of laughs then you've never heard this series. If that is the case then buy series one where it all began and you'll want to buy them all.
