Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student resentful of his life. His mother passed away from a car accident when he was younger, causing his father to resort to alcohol and gambling. This results in fights between the two until Tomoya's shoulder is injured in a fight. Since then, Tomoya has had distant relationships with his father, causing him to become a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, he meets a strange girl named Nagisa Furukawa who is a year older, but is repeating due to illness. Due to this, she is often alone as most of her friends have moved on. The two begin hanging out and slowly, as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life shifting in a new direction.

Clannad to me is one of the best anime shows to come out of Japan in recent years, produced by Kyoto Animation who did Haruhi, Lucky Star, Kanon 2006, Angel Beats and others.

Contains Episodes 1-12
Audio: English/Japanese
Subtitles: English
Region: 2

Clannad is a good drama/slice of life type series with no real violence, bad language, nudity or anything that could be unsuitable for children.

Basically the main character Tomoya Okazaki meets Nagisa Furukawa one day at School, from that day onwards his life starts to change, this chance meeting opens up new possibilities to him, as he meets new friends, deals with their problems and at the same time helps Nagisa with her drama club.

Based mostly at school, this series is quite fun, the characters are very likable, there are lots of moments where you'l laugh, lot's where you'l feel sad, and a few scenes that will make some people cry.

I absolutely love Clannad, I intentionally made this review as non spoilerific as possible as explaining further will ruin the show for people, but rest assured this series is fantastic and is suitable for any age or gender.

I bought both collections 1 & 2 a few months ago, had to, to be loyal to the series. So very glad I did.

There are 12 episodes on 2 discs, I know some would prefer that on 3 discs to up the quality, but the quality is just fine. The subtitles obviously arn't as pretty as fansubber's, but that seems to be the way with DVD releases. I am completely happy with the DVD's though, since I'm lucky/glad they released it at all. Need to get Kanon too... More Key please!!

Oh, theres no english dub, but I'm guessing most who've seen Clannad already won't want an english dub anyways, since usually dubs arn't fantastic. The lack of a dub didn't affect my choice to buy.

Little bit about the series for those who haven't seen it; tis based on one of Key's visual novel games, same as Kanon and Air, other anime based on Key games. Its a semi-fantasy romantic comedy drama I spose. Tis a lovely show, it'll make you cry like nobodies business... specially the second series, Clannad After Story, that was even more of a tear jerker...
My favourite girl is probably Fuuko Ibuko or Kotomi Ichinose. Though Nagisa Furukawa is darling. Okazaki is also super cute(he's one of the very few guys in the show lol, lead male).
The main females have their own arcs, Fuuko, Kotomi, Ryou/Kyou, Tomoyo and of course, Nagisa. Its a bitter sweet story I spose, since only one girl can get the guy, and they all(bar Fuuko) like Tomoya.

I would recommend this series to anyone, seriously, anyone, but not just anyone would watch it sadly. Even though its a masterpiece. Sad even the greatly awesome Japanese cartoons are underrated by most, the movies get the most recognition, if any.

Of all the hundreds of anime series and movies I've watched in recent years this series remains my favourite.

The emotions and ideas conveyed throughout are so strong, and will relate to a lot of people's life problems and experiences, that this series will hit home with almost anyone. As a fore warning, you will undoubtedly be in tears watching this and it's second season; Clannad After Story. The second season is full of the stuff that will really tear your heart out and then later lift you up to such a high that you'll be crying with joy!

If there isn't a UK Blu-ray release added for pre-order before this is released then I would however strongly recommend importing the US (region A) Blu-ray, if you have a multi-region Blu-ray player. This series was made for HD and is noticeably better quality in HD.

...yet this is somehow part of the series' charm.

This is basically anime-Prozac to be watched when you're feeling down, it's a gorgeously animated show with a great chilled-out ambient music score, featuring a cast of instantly likeable characters.

There's some drama, but nothing really terrible and much of the proceedings drift by in a dream-like fashion, with no doubt that it will all be OK in the end.

Give it a try.
