Book Description

Over the course of three decades, Tom Clancy created a world alive with prescient action and remarkable individuals. In Support and Defend, Dominic Caruso is presented with the deadliest challenge of his career.

The next installment in the Dominic Caruso series, Tom Clancy's Full Force and Effect, will be published by Penguin December 2014.

One of Tom Clancy's most storied characters, Dominic Caruso, is the only one who can stop America's secrets from falling into enemy hands in this blockbuster new novel written by Clancy's long-time co-author.

Dominic Caruso. Nephew of President Jack Ryan. FBI agent and operator for The Campus, a top secret intelligence agency that works off the books for the U.S. government. Already scarred by the death of his brother, Caruso is devastated when he can't save a friend and his family from a terrorist attack.

Ethan Ross was a mid-level staffer for the National Security Council. Now he's a wanted fugitive on the run with a micro-drive that contains enough information to wreck American intelligence efforts around the world. The CIA is desperate to get the drive back, but so are the Russians and various terrorist groups, all of whom are closer to catching the fugitive. Only Caruso stands in their way, but can he succeed without the aid of his Campus colleagues?

Support and Defend is a brand new blockbuster thriller featuring Dominic Caruso. Full Force and Effect, the next adventure in the series, will be available from Penguin in Hardback December 2014.

Praise for Tom Clancy:

'There's hardly another thriller writer alive who can fuel an adrenaline surge the way Clancy can' Daily Mail

'Exhilarating. No other novelist is giving so full a picture of modern conflict' Sunday Times

Thirty years ago Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore's Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted on to the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it 'the perfect yarn'. From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.

Mark Greaney has a degree in international relations and political science and is pursuing his master's in intelligence studies with a concentration in criminal intelligence. He is the author of The Gray Man, On Target, and Ballistic.

4.0 out of 5 stars MARK GREANEY IS WORTHY SUCCESSOR TO TOM CLANCY! 22 July 2014
Two months after Tom Clancy’s untimely demise, a Jack Ryan thriller Command Authority which he co-authored with Mark Greaney was released. If there is anyone whom the master storyteller trusts to carry on his legacy, it is Mark Greaney with whom he has penned several bestsellers. I’m delighted that this amazing author has come up with a tight, taut and terrific thriller that will delight Clancy’s fans and also cement his own place as a solid writer in the mold of the late storyteller.

Reading Tom Clancy's Support and Defend by Mark Greaney is not an easy one. I just can’t help comparing Mark’s writing with that of Tom’s which is quite unfair. But as his first solo Tom Clancy novel, I think the comparison is inevitable. As for the debate whether Mark Greaney should carry on the Tom Clancy legacy, I think the matter has been decided by Tom himself when he chose Mark to co-author with him. The matter should rest at that. And to his credit, Mark has carried himself so well with this novel that I’m confident that readers will get to read new stories bearing Tom Clancy’s name for a long time to come.

In a major departure from the Tom Clancy novels, Mark Greaney in a major gamble has brought in Dominic Caruso, an operative of The Campus, as the main protagonist in place of Jack Ryan, and has managed to craft an incredible story in the mold of the Edward Snowden affair with Ethan Ross, a deputy assistant director for Near East and North African affairs of the National Security Council fleeing with a microdrive containing enough information to jeopardize America’s intelligence efforts. With time running out, Dominic Caruso is assigned the task of retrieving the mircrodrive, and he is up against formidable foes who are also keen to lay their hands on it.

Clancy characters feature and the author plays nicely with them. Mark Greaney was a collaborator with Tom Clancy on a couple of the previous novels in the series and was arguable one of the better.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and he does try to stay true the Clancy style of writing. There are layers to the plot (some a little thin admittedly) and characters act independently of each other to draw these layers and threads together.

The pace is fast and that's actually a let down. It lacks the slow burn of the original Clancy books where the layers slowly meld together. There is a lot of sudden punch, and the central character, 'our hero' survives a lot of punishment in the style of a TV series or Hollywood blockbuster. Is he really mortal? With luck like this shouldn't he playing the lottery every week?

A criticism of the series as a whole is the introducing principle characters on the first page - who they are and what they do. It sort of spoils the storyline and dumbs the book down. I really don't like that. It seems as though the author has thought - I need to grab and hold their attention, and their attention span is short. This is a major shortcoming.

However, with that said, it's a fast paced book. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the fantasy shadow world that is not far removed from our every day life. Its not a turgid tome, nor is it poorly written. It's gone for style and BANG! over substance but that does make it entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable 19 Oct. 2014

I was worried the main character wasn't going to be entertaining enough without his campus colleagues but it worked very well. Although It would be nice to see more stories utilising the campus characters.

As always these books are a good read. With the authorship under new management it has in no way changed the punchiness of the story telling. The recent editions of books are so up to date with International relationships they are almost a primer in catching up with geopolitical affairs. Great book for rainy afternoons or a long quiet holiday. Don't just buy this book buy the other books in the series. Jack Jnr's new girlfriend sounds wonderful for him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 1 Sept. 2014
    Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
As Tom Clancy got older, he came to depend more and more on Mark Greaney. In fact, it could be argued that Greaney is the better writer, although perhaps he had the advantage of the approach and style set by Clancy. Whatever, "Support and Defend" is an excellent book, well up with Clancy's best.

Let us hope that Mark Greaney will give us many more "Tom Clancy's", for copyright reasons sadly without the Ryans.
